Trackfan, is it possible that Chris Herpin will participate in track as well as football? Seems to be a pretty good shot putter at 61'+. Herpin would be a terrific addition to the throws squad at ACU. He was 4th in the 6A SP (the SP at the state meet was contested in a steady rain) and even more impressive, he was 2nd in the Texas Relays HS shot put with a throw if 62-6. Thus far, Coach Patterson has shown a willingness to share his good athletes with the T&F team -- this past year both Colt Cooper and Chidi Lebechi competed in the throws for ACU. I would not be surprised at all to see Herpin throwing for ACU next spring.

How much does one track scholarship cost? Good question, oldfan. ACU has to submit a figure to the NCAA that is then used for every sport at ACU. I think for next year, that figure it is a little over $55k. All scholarships are linked to this figure and scholarships are tied to a dollar figure. So, an athlete is not awarded a "half-scholarship" but they are awarded a $28k scholarship. The huge growth of the "grad transfer" has also presented an opportunity for all schools. Grad school does not cost as much as undergrad. A grad student pays by the semester hour, not the single annual cost that allows up to 36 hours in a single 12-month period for undergrads.

Everlyn Kemboi, from UVU, won the national championship last night in the 10k. She has improved drastically each year she has been at UVU. She reps the WAC well.

Thanks trackfan. If my calculation is correct approximately $10MM in Endowment will be required to fund the remaining scholarships. Unfortunately that is not likely to happen anytime soon. When I was a student at ACC (1960-1964) I fell in love with track and field. Wish we could go back to the glory days.

However, reality is that any scholarship endowment money generated is not stacked on top of the current scholarships, but is used to "replace" the scholarship money that is already being given out by the school. There is an endowment at ACU for T&F scholarships that is rather substantial -- named for a famous former ACC/ACU track coach that pays for around 3.0-3.5 scholarships per year on the earnings, but those are NOT 3.0-3.5 new scholarships. Putting numbers to the need -- T&F can give out 30.6 scholarships (18 to women and 12.6 to men). Using the current pay rate that ACU employs, it will take right at $37.5 million to fund the NCAA max for T&F. I vow to fund those scholarships if I win the lottery (not that puny Texas lottery, but the LOTTO). I guess that will require me to actually buy a lottery ticket. Oldfan, while I would love to see those halcyon days from the early 50's to the late 60's return, I simply don't see ACU ever hosting a quadrangular meet again that has Michigan, Ohio State and U of Texas coming to ABILENE for the meet, as happened in 1962.

Oh, those Glory days. I watched that meet. I loved seeing our T&F team beating the big boys, but I was also shocked one time by a guy named Adoph Plummer from UNM. Anyone remember that fellow?

Adolph Plummer was actually the world record holder at one time in the 440 yards. Interestingly, he set the 440 record at the WAC Championships in 1963. There is a pic in the ACC/ACU archives that shows Plummer at the finish line -- the dude had sinews in his legs that were amazing in that pic. His duels with Earl Young were legendary.

He looked like Superman up close. Those legs were super-human, and he was a big man. I remember thinking he could dunk a basketball and bring down the whole backboard. When he beat Earl, he seemed to actually run the last 100 yards faster than the first. He was remarkable.
