Looking at Prairie View's first game stats was strange. They did not make a yard passing but had three players who rushed for over 100 yards. I think Texas Southern had a total offense of 166 Yards and PV ran for 388 yards if my math is right.

Like us PV has a new QB and experienced running backs. Like us PV has a seasoned “rookie” Head Coach, Bubba McDonald PV is ranked as high as 6th in the HBCU Top 10 poll. Massey believes ACU has a 75% chance of winning. -10 ACU over PV

If you look at the previous two meetings between PVAM and Texas Southern, two years ago it was 40-17 and this year 40-23. PVAM certainly hasn't made any major jumps in progressing either their defense or offense. They are rated below us in Massey and predicted to lose to us. I am counting this as a win, although it was one I felt uneasy about. Our defense did fairly well game one but needs to step up the run defense on this one. Our offense needs to make the biggest improvement between week 1 and 2 here, especially our OL blocking and our rhythm between the QB and receivers. That is the biggest thing I am looking for. This is definitely winnable for us, but not guaranteed. If we don't continue to make improvements and don't protect the ball, PVAM could walk away with the W. I think this should be a good game for us. We did actually move up the Massey ratings a little after last week. Let's continue that trend. As far as Blair goes, he just needs to settle in and not overreact. He will come back.

He was also one of their leading rushers, including a 70 yard run for a TD.

PVAM can throw the ball as well as run. That may not be their strength, or baseline strategy, but they can do it. They threw for 339 yards and rushed for 160 yards in their game against Alcorn St. where they almost came back. IF we can do what KP says, and make them one dimensional, then I definitely like our chances. We tightened up the pass defense last week. We will have to do the same this week and still cover the ends and center. It does look like their OL is big but still has difficulty with pressure, so let's bring it.

Last year Prairie View passed the ball 10-11 times per ball game Trazon Connley, this year’s starter, played in 5 games in 2021 and was used exclusively as a runner. He made zero passing attempts. Texas Southern totally shut down their passing game, with Connelly going 0-5 with one interception and his back up was 0-1 with another interception for a total of 0-6-2. . Just from looking at the stats, making them one dimensional seems very doable. Prairie View still won the Texas Southern game pretty easily anyway relying solely on the run. Our front seven should get quite a work out.

Two observations from watching the PVAM vs TSU game:1) PVAM is actually fairly quick defending the ends. TSU may just be slow, but PVAM was quick to swarm the ball when it moved laterally first. We will definitely have to spread the ball enough to keep the DEs on their toes. 2) Connley reminds me a lot of Chandler when he scrambled. He is very quick and could get out of tackling position in a hurry. I can see why he was used as a runner. We had trouble getting to Chandler and several times he scrambled for yardage last week. Now, we minimized it, but if we stack the box and rush him to the point that he scrambles to the side, I hope we have enough to get to him before he consistently picks up first downs.

Interesting, FCS Fans Nation picked PVAM to win because of our new starting QB and awkward offense last week. We got one vote that we would win just for Devil's advocate sake. I guess they don't think that we are going to stop or score against PVAM. It really shows me how little these people look outside of their box. I shouldn't be surprised really. Every week they, and others, simply spend the majority of their time talking about the same teams over and over, teams they like and are familiar with.

We may as well resign ourselves to being held in low regard until we prove we are improved. The only time it’s really bothered me is when the WAC rep on podcasts disparages his own conference apart from SFA. Btw, where did you see this prediction? I didn’t find it on their fb site.

PVAM is a really strange team to prepare for. It is amazing in this day and age that a team can win a game without completing a single pass. Does anyone know what kind of offense they run? Is is some kind of triple option offense like Army? I thought that the best part of our game against Lamar was our run defense - about the only run that worked for Lamar was when their QB scrambled and ended up having to run for his life. If our defense can rise up with a strong run defense again it would appear ACU can win this game.
I know that we left lots of points on the board against Lamar -- 3 missed FG's and the disastrous 1st-and-goal from the 2 that we could not punch into the end zone. I also think that the offense should get better each week as the players get used to playing together. Maverick looked like a player who had played in a live game in 4 years, but anyone at the game could see that he has tremendous arm strength and I have to think that his decision-making will improve each game as well.
I predict 31-14 for ACU for this game. I think this offense will score at least 30 points in each game from now on, except for the Mizzou game of course.

Here is video from their game last week:
They run a spread, RPO offense. QB is very mobile and looks to run. LB's have to stay home. DB's can't just lock in on the guy they are covering.
I would expect, while they want to establish the run, I would bet they try to test us early, like Lamar did in the pass game

Thanks, Mavsman. I watched most of the video and see what you mean -- the QB is elusive and is run-first. PVAM should be a good test for our DL and LB's for sure.

Our prediction is at about the 49 min. mark. I know that most look at us superficially, but The Rev was the one that made comments that I think he knows better. He knows us and if he was observant enough to say that we were awkward offensively, which we were, but we also put up good offensive numbers and stuffed Lamar defensively so he should have observed those things as well. The others on this podcast, as well as others that cover FCS I am just learning to take with a grain of salt. It's funny to watch these guys talk about the same teams week in and week out, boringly funny but funny.
