I wonder if Tanner's defense 1st mantra will keep offensive minded big men away. May be imoressive to smaller players but...

Why is this a major disappointment? How much do you know about the player? Sure the staff would have liked to have him, but maybe they have someone better in mind. Again, fall in love with a tall player just because he’s tall and you will get burned

The game sure seems to favor having a truly big man that can score as well as defend and rebound. This past season we had no one that filled that description. Whomever we sign going forward will truly need to be at least one big, probably two of them. Life is easier with tall talent, of course, so just being big is not the whole story and I sure don't think it is. I just hope we can land some talented height that overcomes our difficulties when facing really capable big opponents.
If we pursued Loofe for two years, someone thought he was worth the time.
But what I meant by being disappointed is someone choosing Middle Tennessee over ACU.

Ideally, you want a "big" that can score, but also rebound and defend. Loofe was not getting a lot of playing time at the prep school he was at. Is he talented yes, and the prep school is one of the top 10 in the nation. Coleman is a defensive monster, but he is raw on the offensive end. Again, do not assume because a player is 6'10+ that he will be dominant. Is the staff looking for that player? Yes, but so are over 300 other schools

Didier Maleng is still available, and the staff knows about him as well his recommendation letter. They still don't seem interested...

Didier Maleng is still available, and the staff knows about him as well his recommendation letter. They still don't seem interested... Maybe there are reasons. Just a look at his stats from this year as a freshman, he averaged 5.9 pts and 5.7 rebs per game. When you look at games against the top teams in the NJCAA, he had four points and one board against Indian Hills at home and four points and six boards agains them on the road. IH finished No. 5 in the nation in D1 NJCAA. He did have 8 pts, 7 rebs against Barton in the third game of the season. Barton finished No. 20 and Triton finished No. 20. He was 10th in scoring on his team, but second in RB. Triton lost in the regional championship 73-70 in OT, where he had his best game of the season with 12 points, 13 boards and 7 blks. He did finish the year with 68 blocks.

Probably best for Maleng to go back to JUCO for 1 more year. He can likely become a starter, which will only see his stats improve.

All fair points on Maleng, but 5.9 ppg is better than YG's 2.8 & 1.5 ppg. Also, 5.7 rpg is better than YG's 1.4 & 1.1 rpg. Of course, I am going off of YG's ACU stats, which Maleng doesn't have. YG's FG and FT avgs did improve some after getting to ACU, but his ppg went down significantly. Maybe that's because YG couldn't play defense as well as Maleng, as some of his other stats show, which we need. Of course, this isn't really about Maleng. It's about several other posters trying to deflect with numbers that really don't justify it. IF the ACU coaches do better, then great, but they haven't so far, so Maleng is still a player worth looking into since they haven't been able to recruit any better. Of course, this is also about the ACU coaches saying forget about anyone and they have the prerogative to do what they wish, which of course they do. Maybe they want better, but they haven't shown it. And the consequences of either way; we shall see... I doubt Maleng is really 230 lbs, but he is bigger than YG and still seemed to play better ball, even at the JC level. Maybe he can stay there and maybe that will be better for him. YG isn't the best person to compare to stat wise, but he was one of the top guys in a position in which Maleng would be expected to serve. Him, or any other big/semi-big... ANd, we recruited YG. Maybe the coaches don't want to make the same mistakes.

Comparing a players D1 stats to JUCO stats is not comparable. So let's make it so- Gai also played JUCO basketball. His freshmen year, he averaged 4.3 points and 4.8 rebounds per game That is almost 1.5 point more and 1.0 rebound less than Maleng. Maleng is a much better shot blocker than Gai is (3/1 ratio). So why do I think Maleng needs 1 more year of JUCO basketball? He has 1 D1 offer and it is from Radford. SMU offered him when he was in high school, so clearly there is talent there. But go back to JUCO 1 more year, work on the little things and his recruitment will become even stronger.
Gai is not a back to the basket player that the staff wanted him to be. He is a face up jump shooter that is extremely long. So far, it hasn't paned out like the staff wanted.

I do want to make it known that the staff is active in the portal, looking at JUCO players as well as unsigned high school players. Currently, they have known interest in 14 players that are 6'9 or taller (12 of the 14 are 6'10+). At this point is difficult to say if they are close on a commitment, but I do anticipate that things will really begin to pick up in the next 2-3 weeks
