Time to move on. Luckily, we get a second chance at SFA but in order to make it mean anything, we’ve got to beat everybody else. Weird stat of the year: ACU has given up 119 points so far. 59 in the first quarter and 60 in the other 3 quarters. Runner up for weird stat. SHSU did not play and jumped 12 spots in the Massey ratings.
First job: Southern Utah Thunderbirds for homecoming. According to Massey, we are a 5 point favorite. The TBirds have run 188 times and passed 206. Their offense has gained 382 ypg and their defense has given up 471 ypg. They have committed a lot of penalties to the tune of almost 86 ypg. The QB is Justin Miller, a COVID Junior who has started the last two years. They appear to depend on a short passing game. Miller does not run and they don’t really have a dependable running back. Their best weapon is receiver Isaiah Wooden who has 4 100+ yard games. They also use him on end around plays, etc and he is a dangerous kick returner. Exciting player, for sure.
Last week against Tarleton both teams left the defenses at home with each team surpassing 500 total yards. SUU gave up pass plays of 67, 74, 60 and 48 yards.

This will be another tough game. The rest of our schedule has games that can go either way. Hopefully we have the homefield and homecoming advantage this weekend.

No doubt North Dakota is #12, Sam Houston St is #23, SFA is #44, ACU is #48, Tarleton St is #50 and Southern Utah is #55 ranked at this time. Each of these teams will be difficult to beat, but I think we are capable of beating any of them are losing to any of them.

I love that Coach Patterson gives frequent press conferences.

My cousin was an English professor at SUU so I need us to beat them for family bragging rights. The cousin may have been the Poet Laureate of Utah (which he was) but we cannot allow him to be victorious at our homecoming.

I love that Coach Patterson gives frequent press conferences. I have really appreciated his frequent pressers. In this one he talked a little more about changing things up a little and preparing for the opponent, but his primary emphasis is on the team and players. Again, I like that as long as that includes enough study and preparation for what the opponent actually does. Anyway, it's good to see him joking with the press and keeping communication open.

SUU will be a good challenge. They have respectable size, in fact, more size at RB than several of the teams we have faced. The T-Birds are completing almost 66% of their passes which points to a well-organized attack that has to be disrupted by a pass rush or pass breakups. I wouldn't expect them to simply misfire, though they might commit a few penalties under pressure.
The numbers might suggest that ACU can also move the ball on them. I would expect them to crowd the line and dare us to beat them in the air (like SFA). It will take some good execution early to loosen them up. It would be nice if we could hit on a few big plays in the passing game.
Vegas has this as a one-score game. That looks about right. Home-field advantage should be the difference for the Cats.

I would be shocked if ACU doesn’t finally come out of gate hot in this one, offensively and defensively. I think it finally hit to the core that they must start better so I believe they’ll prove they can do it. I think we may just start seeing the full potential of this team this Saturday in front of a big, (and is it a stretch to say a raucous?) Homecoming crowd. It’s going to be a big win for the purple and white.

Who will play on the OL Saturday? We were pretty depleted at the end of the SFA game with Thielen and Moore out. Was Hatten out too--Pullen was on the field at the last?

If we have a "raucous crowd" I hope that there is an ambulance at the stadium. I will be so shocked that I might have a serious medical event and need to be rushed to Hendrick. I was not aware that "raucous crowds" were even allowed at ACU home games. I thought that maybe one of the stadium rules was that fans were supposed to avoid being noisy, sit in their seats, and just observe what was happening on the field. Are fans allowed to stand up and yell at ACU games? How many ACU fans would know what "raucous" even looks like? It has appeared to me for decades that ACU fans have more of an opera mindset than a "support the team" mindset. I would LOVE to be proved totally wrong. I will now step down off of my soapbox and go on with my day. Hopefully I won't break an ankle stepping off.

If they focus on a consistent short passing game, are we going to play soft and give them the space so they don't get behind us? If that's the case and we aren't able to sustain a good pass rush, it could be a long day. On the offense side, I like how McIvor is finally getting some rhythm and momentum with the offense. My concern this time of year is if injuries are beginning to affect us.

Howerton will start at left tackle and Sakiri will play right guard. Hatten is okay. (According to Dylan Howerton). Neither Moore nor Thielen will play this week ahead of the bye week.
