I still think this game is winnable although we will need to defend the run better than we did last Saturday. This will need to be a complete game, but I think that we will be focused. Sam is currently 5-2 and 5-0 in WAC-SUN opponents. They did lose to NAU early on. Their mid season OC change hasn't really affected them and they continue to play well holding back several starters for next year. They have run for 1196 yards and passed for 1068 yards. Their opponents have managed to pass the ball against them totaling 1751 yards. That will work in our favor, but our running game will need to stay on point to keep the passing effective. Hopefully McIvor is fully healthy. I won't be able to go to the game and will be out of state instead. I am not sure how much I will be able to follow online. I look at this game as being as important as the final game against SFA and I agree with KP, one game at a time and continue to get better. We can't afford to look to the post season yet. Take care of business now and that will sort itself out.

Sam is coming off their third bye week of the year. Can anyone ever remember a team having 3 byes in the same season that didn't involve a playoff run? They are playing out these late November games with no incentive.
The game notes from their Tarleton State game revealed that Coach Keeler has been actively "redshirting" existing players. I've quoted the relevant passage below:

They are playing out these late November games with no incentive. The game notes from their Tarleton State game revealed that Coach Keeler has been actively "redshirting" existing players. I've quoted the relevant passage below: - With the FBS looming and a new era of redshirt regulations upon the college football landscape, Sam Houston is taking full advantage of the policies. Coach K.C. Keeler has publicly stated that a number of key players will play 4 games and redshirt the 2022 season. Included in that group who have played their 4 games and are set to sit out the remainder of the year are starting wide receivers Ife Adeyi and Noah Smith, starting offensive lineman Ethan Hagler, starting tight end Jax Sherrard, starting defensive end Jevon Leon and starting defensive back Isaiah Downes. - Those redshirts have altered the look of the Bearkat offense/defense going into the final stretch of the season with only 5 projected offensive starters and 6 projected defensive starters being returning players. Diving deeper into that, the 6 projected defensive starters returning from a year ago only had a combined 2 career starts at SHSU entering 2022 while the 5 returners on offense had just 23 combined starts at SHSU with 19 of those being from wide receiver Cody Chrest. The redshirting of some key players is good for us, but don't think that they don't have stud players in those spots still. They showed their skill against Tarleton and we can expect them to give us all they have. They aren't rolling through their final games without trying to win.

Most Bearkat fans know their defense is till their strength and think their offense will have improved with another bye week. Their running game could indeed give us fits. Except for a few fans that know us, they are expecting a pretty decisive victory in their favor. We pass blocked pretty well at Tarleton, but we didn't run block very well. I am hoping that improves as we will will need our running game to be consistent. One thing for sure is that this will be a very physical game.

A couple of things in our favor: 1) we are playing SH for our playoff lives and 2) they have nothing to play for, in fact they are outright telling their team that they are getting ready for next year. Hopefully our wounded warriors are one more week healthier. We really missed Reese Young last week and with Cirby Coheley going down, our LB crew is taxed. Our DE's and/or Outside backers need to control (seal) the edge. We did a poor job of this against Tarleton. I am impressed with our in game adjustments, both offense and defense and like how our offense seems to be more diverse with each game. Clarke, Golightly and Blayne Taylor all made some great, highly contested catches last week and having Ant Smith back is a real positive. Our TE's seem to have disappeared and I believe they could make a difference in the passing game.

I really feel good about this game. ACU 28 SHSU 24 I never feel good when we play Sam or SFA. I'll be thrilled if we can beat both of them.

The Game Notes for ACU and Sam are available here. While, as fans, we know a lot about the Bearkats (their style of play, etc.), this week's game includes many unknowns. Sam Houston's roster flipped over as much or more than ACU's last fall. Few players remain for both teams who were on the field at Wildcat Stadium. Looking through the Games Notes, I count one starter for Sam in their two-deep that started against ACU last year (WR Cody Chrest). Another complicating factor is that Coach Keeler has been actively redshirting players as Sam Houston prepares to jump to the FBS next year. It's hard to know who will play, but the Bearkats are much better and more experienced on paper than on the field. In ACU's last victory in Huntsville, the Wildcats won at the line of scrimmage against a smaller Bearkat team. The Game Notes point to another game in which ACU will have a significant size advantage in the trenches. With the growth of our passing game in the last two weeks, ACU could be poised for a solid showing. If the Wildcats can avoid turnovers and a sluggish start, this should be a competitive game. The Bearkats made enough key plays late in the first half and at the end of the game to turn back SFA, winning by a fingernail. I predict a one-score game going into the fourth quarter. Can ACU tack on a score late as they did against Tarleton? I see another win for the Purple and White.

I am praying for a win. My concern is their defense. They are only given up 125 points in 7 games or less than 18 points per game. If you throw out the 31 points against Texas A&M or 15.67 points per game against FCS opponents. They only allowed 16 points to SFA while we allowed 41.
Our best hope is if Sam Houston does rest some players to save their redshirts. In that case I think we can win. My guess is 24-21 ACU.

Their defense is stout and even if we have a size advantage in the trenches, the trenches are still going to be a difficult battle. If we can manage to keep runs going, then we stand a better chance at keeping our passing game effective. I agree that turnovers and penalties will be key for us. Start out strong and play clean and we have a chance.

Aren’t we better off just resting our starters to make sure we don’t have any injuries? We need everyone healthy for next Saturday for the game that matters

Aren’t we better off just resting our starters to make sure we don’t have any injuries? We need everyone healthy for next Saturday for the game that matters If we win today and next week, that would give us 7 “countable” wins and the playoff committee would see that as a strength when deciding on at-large bids. On top of that, it’s always fun to beat the school that can’t spell.
