I wanted to make a comment on the A&M game in retrospect. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. The alumni tailgate was very nice, and experiencing Corps of Cadets march into the stadium was a lot of fun. I thought to myself, seeing ACU play in Kyle Field was something beyond my wildest dreams as an alumnus. We actually got their attention with the fumble run back and drawing first blood. Overall the team played with all their hearts which is as much as can be asked. A&M has won seven games including ours, three by margins than ours, New Mexico, University of Louisiana at Monroe, and Mississippi State the week before. All of those are FBS teams. Go Cats! To be considered: The score was 24-10 with six minutes left in the game. You could have made big bucks in Vegas if you had taken that bet for ACU. Bet that the odds would have been a 28 point spread minimum at that point in the game.

Just wondering how to properly assess our 2023 football season. With a 5-6 record, it seems that we should have been about 50% in most stats but that really wasn't the case. Our opponents ran over 100 more offensive plays than we did for the season. Our 3rd down conversion percentage was about 40% but we didn't even try but 8 times to convert on 4th down. I'm sure some of that was that we had a good punter (43.47 yds) and good kicker (14-15 FG's). We actually only gave the ball away 10 times (7 int, 3 fumbles). We had a good OL, good RB's, supposedly the best TE's in the conference but we never seemed to have that "spark" needed to win close games nor to outscore opponents when we needed to. Some have indicated that the fault is our play calling (1st yr play caller). Do we see that improving next year? What do we need to look for in recruiting on the offensive side of the ball?
On defense we played mostly a 3-3-5 with at least one LB or safety rushing the QB. We had 13 sacks for the year (our opponents 18). We had some beef up front with Massey, Oke, Butley and Herpin but were challenged on the edge (eventually moving Colt Cooper from TE to DE). Linebacking was probably our best defensive position with Moore, Young, Wilhoit and Coheley. The play of Cooper and Coheley late in the season was outstanding. Lawson was a pleasant surprise at DT. We continued to give up big pass plays in the secondary even though Jolly and Egbo were solid at corner (especially in the red zone) and even though on paper we were playing 5 defenders. Jameer Dudley seemed to be a spark when he was in but some of our highly recruited guys didn't make much of a mark (Mukes, O'Neal, Ramsey). Tyson Williams impressed me when he got on the field. And why was tackling so poor thruout the year? Moffett was a big hitter, had a nose for the ball but seldom wrapped up. Kelley also had a hard time finishing his tackles. Do we have the players to make our defense better for next year? Where do we need to add? Mavsman has suggested in the recruiting thread what we are looking for in recruiting by position. What will make us better for 2024?

I hesitate to blame play calling. I'm more inclined to blame inconsistant execution. I still think that we were severely limited on offense and didn't have a consistent playmaker at wide receiver.
The coaches need to find some specific players who can be plugged in next year if we are going to compete for the playoffs.

I suggest that we get several four and five star recruits. That should not be difficult.

I hope to get some outstanding football players. Really don't care about the # of stars. I'd like some fire in their bellies to be successful. I'd like some receivers who catch balls that are thrown well and who fight to catch those off target. I like some defenders who put the ball carrier on the ground instead of rolling into them or push them towards the sideline. I don't want players who give up on plays.

We were supposed to have this incredible O-Line and deep stable of running backs.

Not every ball is going to be thrown on target and not every ball will be caught but we should be operating between 60 and 65 completion percentage; not low 50s. I believe that 10% increase would have changed the course of several games we played. Execution!

I could have answered more than 2 positions but we seriously need corners. Maybe Mukes can replace Jolly? I also think that DL is still a need. Particularly pass rushers. However, a couple of young guys stood out this year so the cupboard is not bare. Need more production from the slot receiver position.

Tristan Golightly and Blayne Taylor are the only returning outside receivers who received playing time this year. Jacoby Boykins and Harrison Foster are also on the roster. Was Boykins injured this year? What was the reason he didn't play this year?

Boykins dressed out every game just didn't see the field. Other receivers did see the field including McCasland and Graham and M. Jones.

Saw where Tucker Horn from Trinity was named the non-FBS player of the year by Texas Football. I hated to lose him when he decided to transfer but it probably ended up being a good decision by him as I doubt he would have ever been the starter for ACU.
Patrick Jolly was named Defensive Back of the Year and Cirby Coheley was on the All Texas non-FBS defense at linebacker and Kyle Ramsey as kicker.
