Over the next few days, I want to see what the Catchat faithful think about each position currently. I will NOT list every player at each position, but those that could have a chance to start or see meaningful playing time. When you vote, share why you voted the way that you did
QB- Maverick McIvor- Sr Quayde Hawkins- Jr Carson Haggard- Soph DeAngelo Ponder- Fr
I voted this position as a C. I would really love to see McIvor take the job and run with. It seemed to me that he was better in 2022 than he was in 2023. Maybe it was because Ethan Long was here to push him and the backups this year were pretty young and inexperienced. I do expect Haggard will make a strong push for the job, as arm strength is considered a strong point for him. I do believe whoever wins the job has the weapons around them to be pretty solid. The question remains, do we have the QB to get us to where we want to go. At the moment, I'm not sure.

I gave a C also. McIvor showed signs of being a good D1 QB but then would also have too many moments where he would miss wide open receivers. I don't know enough about the backups to have much of a feeling one way or the other about any of them. None seemed to generate much media excitement when they signed.
We seem to be able to recruit receivers but then I wonder if we will have anyone that can consistently get the ball to them. Maybe the receivers have been part of the problem. McIvor seemed better when he had Kobe Clark to throw to.

We have no experience behind McIvor. I keep hearing great things about Ponder but until we see him perform under game conditions we won't know. I thought Quayde Hawkins had promise but was underwhelming when he came in last year. Haggard's capabilities are yet to be seen. I'm sure spring will be assessment time. If we go after another QB in the summer then we'll know the staff isn't comfortable going to war with what we've got. I think right now we are incomplete.

Hope it clicks this season for Maverick. To me, he had a great spring last year and I thought he'd light it up during the fall but something was off. Seemed like he regressed. Also thought Hawkins had a gun for an arm but struggles with accuracy. Felt he was dangerous when he took off and ran. Concerned now about either of them being comfortable given this is now the 3rd OC in as many years.

I wouldn't be bothered a bit if Hut Graham got into the QB mix. He's listed on the roster as a QB and I think he was hoping to get a shot when he left Tech for ACU. But he was pretty impressive at times as a receiver.

I voted incomplete. I would not be surprised if the staff is still hunting for an experienced QB. Apparently there are still a handful of scholarships open for May transfers.

I voted C. McIvor should be a good D1 QB1. I say that because of his arm. But something seemed off this past season. The modern game is dominated by mobile quarterbacks that can run when needed, and perhaps more importantly can throw a pass that matches the situation. That means not firing a rocket at a crossing receiver three yards away and/or confounding a defense by deceptive and unanticipated runs. McIvor seemed to want to avoid being hit, which could be from a bell ringer early in the season or just too much caution. Without the threat, the game is easier to defend. Hopefully another season will help correct our situation and we can be a much stronger threat. BTW, when a QB looks down the line just to check on the first option receiver, that adds to the difficulty. All too often our QB would tip off the called play.

I voted D. I don't believe we have a QB or offensive identity. I feel a lack of excitement around the program overall. This I think is largely due to the fact that it feels we have been trying to catch up to everyone in all ways. Hiring replacements, late to the recruitment party, and overall uncertain. I think the biggest reason for voting D is that I felt optimistic about last year's team and specifically the QB position taking a step forward. I feel like another step back is coming around the corner.
