Senator John Cornyn was at ACU touring NEXTLab this week. He was impressed and gave a fine news conference that was reported by TV and others. His quick comprehension of the complex research and engineering was very impressive. Lots of news people and cameras inside the SERC. I even got directed to the news of the event on my home page browser. He said he knew his assignment was to now support ACU's nuclear effort in Washington DC and get ACU's name on materials we need at the Department of Energy. He praised the students and said they would be the energy leaders of the future. All in all, a very supportive visit.
Later this week at a Presidential Dinner, ACU-ex Dr. Scott Acton will be honored as an Alumni for his major role in the James Webb Space Telescope. Scott was a key person synchronizing the mirrors of the Telescope and for his astonishing thoughts when viewing the first images. Galaxies looking back into time seemed to go on forever, a surprise for the scientific community. ACU is not your normal university.

ACU is a Christian community that does not fear science. In fact, we embrace it. Those of us who go back to the sixties remember ACU as a fine liberal arts university. But now … we are so much more. Business, engineering, physics, nursing. We are leaders in all of these fields and more. I’m proud to be an alum and a former faculty member.

Indeed, we can all be very proud of the university, but best of all, the students have access to a great education in a Christian environment. Our graduates will hold the keys for a better future and they will make us proud as well. The accomplishments noted in this topic and in departments around the campus are truly noteworthy. Sometimes when travelling around to give presentations about ACU's research, I get asked if we are now comparable to some famous or well-known university and I get to keep a straight face and serious look while saying, "Well, our nuclear research is probably a little stronger than X university's." Hey, my insides think that is pretty thrilling.

I probably do overdo it about ACU progress and growth, but others notice as well. One key person who has is yet another Nobel Laureate who said this about the University's students: "ACU has a reputation for putting out very capable, very clever physics students." Quote of Dr. Eric Cornell, winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in physics.
And the director of the large hadron collider at Brookhaven National Lab in New York has mentioned that they probably could not do their research without the help of the ACU students who build the detectors for the collider.
We really are not an ordinary university.
