Thank you Oscar for the link to standards and to 86 for his insights on Mancell. I was blown away by the film I saw on Mancell but I'm not a technique guy so I didn't really know if he passes more than just "my eye test." I'm hopeful he's the real deal for us. He certainly will have some really skilled players around him at RB and receiver. If we can give him time to throw or holes to run thru we'll be good to go. Now if our defense can find some additional stoppers.

We've had some QB's in the past who could really fling it. Those I've personally seen include Jim Lindsey, Clint Longley, Jim Reese, Rex Lamberti, John Franks, Billy Malone, Mitch Gale and John David Baker. Few if any were dangerous runners also. Today's game seems to have moved towards QB's who can do both. Mansell is an explosive runner.

I want to try to watch a little bit of these kids. I started with Mansell. There are plenty to watch on him. My short summary on him is that he is quite possibly the best quarterback we have ever signed. Is that too much? The coaches rave about his IQ, which is something that is hard to see on film. But you can see him occasionally go through his progressions until he finds the open receiver. Is he actually reading the defense or is he setting up the defense? Hard to tell, either is good. A couple things stand out about his passing. Most importantly, he has good footwork. He sets his feet quickly when he moves around and always seems to get balanced before he throws the balls. Throwing motion also looks good. Cannon of an arm, too. I don’t see any throw he can’t make. Keep in mind, Mitchell Gale fit that last description too. If he had a flaw it was lack of touch at times. This one is also hard to tell, but Mansell seems to have it, especially on the deep throws. You can also see some touch when he’s on the move. The limited highlights show a good deep ball (accuracy), another thing Gale lacked. What makes Mansell a complete QB in today’s game is his running ability. He’s a phenomenal runner. Big, tough, fast, quick, vision. Everything you want in a runner, plus the passing attributes. Sema’J Davis will always be a better runner, because that guy has elite level running abilities, and not just for a QB. He’s elite for any position. I actually thought I was going to look forward to what Davis could put together as the full time starter. But just a little bit of film from Mansell and you see it’s not really close. Davis can’t throw the ball like Mansell. Slight drop off running the ball from Davis, much better passer (strength and accuracy) than Anthony. I think we have a major impact starter at the most important position in sports. If we got nothing else right, we got this one right, and it should give us all hope for big things to come this fall. Bingo. I think Dorrel found his Blake Bolles/Joel Osborn.

What I am most interested in seeing happen with our program is the strength and toughness development and recruitment of our WRs and CBs.
Neece is a small school kid with good size and has experience competing against big 12 competition in practice. I want to see him use his size and strength for us. Same can be said for Harmon, he is tall but he looked lanky, the freshman that redshirted last year, Davis I believe, is the same build and so is the Boise transfer. The knock on the Boise transfer was the physicality since he didn’t need it in high school. We need these guys to be big targets in both length and strength. Between our TEs and Lutz and these guys, if we mix in some quickness with Clark and McConnell and Lee we could have lots of versatility.
Corner backs at our level need to be able to tackle and stop the run, I want great coverage but I would love to see our corners play with some edge. We had some hitters at safety the past couple of years but we are all aware of their shortcomings against the pass. Let’s see if we can get 4 DBs that can do both.

Kudos to Oscar. One of the recurring themes on the board is why don’t we recruit more locally? Well. Looks like we may have turned that corner.

Who's the one Freshman signee everyone is excited about? Mine's Cam Byrom. He's athletic and productive and I think he'll end up being a stud for us.

I'm going to go with Hayden Burke. Judging from his HUDL video, he could be the best freshman lineman we've signed since Kade Parmelly. Big, thick guy who holds his blocks to the ground. Coaches think he'll play center and I think he could be a 3-4 year starter if he redshirts.

This isn't an excitment vote per say, but an intrigue vote. A kid like this can make a really big difference in an area that we HAVE to remain strong. I think he will find a lot of challenges. I have been making an argument for bigger bodies that can develop appropriately. I have always known that size alone doesn't matter, still with the right kid, it can be a big asset. Can he condition his body weight correctly and gain the strength, speed, technique and IQ that will be required? OL Sean McKenney, Harlan, 6'3 320

As I've said earlier, Mansell is probably the highest rated recruit in program history--in terms of outsiders rating his talent level. It will be refreshing to see a QB that can routinely evade the rush and make plays downfield. Plus, as several have noted, he has the wheels to be a threat on the ground. If we put some strong line play in front of him, we're in pretty good hands on offense.

Since Blaylock is listed as a soph, does that mean Boise St. did not release him from his NLIT? What did he do last year?

I'm intrigued about the prospects of Austin Lozano. I will be watching the progress of Chris Satterfield. Could be a Ryan Stapp or Adonis Davis.
