The Prada Cup qualifying for the America's Cup (to win the right to sail against New Zealand) is scheduled to be on Suddenlink channel 43 (NBCSN) at 1:00 pm CST January 31.
Oops... cancel that one. NBCSN is playing acrobatic skiing instead. Bummer for me since the new America's Cup yachts are so extremely exciting. I think it was scheduled but America lost its semifinal bid in four straight races and the last one was a disaster. Here is a 4 minute and 44 second video of the capsize of American Magic. Such capsizes are very dangerous. Under full spinnaker, on a planing Flying Scot while racing, I have been flipped completely over the bow, end over end. Scary.

After the USA got demolished it fell to Britain and Luna Rossa to battle it out to see who will challenge the New Zealanders. The USA sailed poor races and had to rebuild part of their yacht after the capsize in the video above, but they still did something I never thought possible. America Magic reached a speed of over 50 knots (almost 60 miles and hour) and still lost. This is the now the last series to determine the challenger and shows a race between the last two competitors in the running. If you have ever sailed, this is simply amazing. I've gotten to around 30 knots on a windsurfer and these guys are doing 40 to 50 knots with massive racers now. A collision would likely be deadly. A knot is approximately 1.15 mph.
