I want to commend the city of Abilene for trying to address the city’s longstanding lack of air service and competition among its air providers. I am disappointed that United is once again pulling out in spite of the subsidy. As a Houstonian and ACU alumnus who owns a house in Abilene and who has business connections there as well, it was nice to have some competition in air service to Abilene from IAH. Amazingly the price for a ticket went down substantially, and the flight was about an hour vs. the five or six hours through DFW. I might as well drive up Hwy. 36. The travel time is about the same. I also believe that good air service helps in recruitment of both students and athletes from the Houston area and southeast Texas, so kudos to Abilene for attempting to address this issue.

It’s unfortunate that United didn’t work out. It seems like another COVID casualty. Maybe it won’t be long until another airline comes in, whether it be United or Southwest. Of course, some charter hybrids are growing and becoming more affordable.
