UCA is going to test our secondary with both short and long passing. They are only 1-3 on the year, but have had a harder schedule than us. We all know that we have a hard time getting past the Bears. I was up in Arkansas when we let them come back to beat us. This is going to be a tough match. If we continue to attack the ball and not rack up penalties, we should be able to slow them down some. The key will be putting pressure on Smith. If we stay healthy and spread the ball around, I think we make a game of it. I hope our guys come in swinging and have a never give up attitude. UCA should be the favorite, but an upset would be nice.....

Prior to last week, I did not give ACU much of a chance in this game. I was so impressed with the defense and Stone Earl's passing this past weekend that I am on the fence now. Maybe, home field advantage will be the difference.

Would love to see the Cats pull this one out, but I am just afraid of riding a little too high after the great Lamar game. Just always seems like anytime you get a win like that, it comes back to bite you the next week.

Just always seems like anytime you get a win like that, it comes back to bite you the next week. Our maturity and progress will both be tested. I feel we can make a game of it now, but if we tilt the game in our favor is still uncertain. I hope I get proved wrong.

After thinking about this weeks game a bit, I do believe that ACU will get the win. Hopefully I am not basing this on the outstanding performance against Lamar.

We are only a .5 of a point underdog to UCA? That is a moral victory by itself!

It seemed to me we played at a higher level for longer (entire game) than we have in quite a while (since the Nichols St and Sam Houston games several years back or the McNeese St win). This showed this team that they are capable of playing at that level. Can UCA exploit our weaknesses or will we exploit theirs is the question? Have we improved in the secondary or was Lamar a fluke (partly both, methinks)? I believe that we will be able to move the ball vs UCA, will they be able to move the ball vs us? Having a 2-headed game plan (Earle-pass, Mansell-run, 3 RB's who can change up) gives UCA more things to plan for. I think the confidence that came from the Lamar game will spill over into better play vs UCA. I think we win this one.

Breylin Will test our secondary. Lamar’s QB’s were not nearly as accomplished. No doubt, we will definitely have to put up points to win this game. Central Arkansas is averaging almost 34 points/game even though they have lost three times in four weeks.

ACU is eager to show its overall growth and face a significant challenge on Saturday against a veteran Bears team. Bookending the UCA defense is their talented DEs: Super Senior Nathan Grant (6’4 245) and Soph. Logan Jessup (6’3 255). How they match up with ACU’s new offensive tackles may be a key to the game. The Bears LBs have better than average speed which may make rollouts and executing screen passes more challenging. Their secondary, however, has experienced some growing pains in replacing Robert Rochelle, who went on the NFL. But last week, against Sam Houston, they recorded 10 pass breakups, led by 3 each from DB Wesley Anusiem and DB Deandre Lamont. That total doubled their pass breakups for the year. Lamont also had 8 tackles (4 unassisted) in the game. He has also been the ASUN as defensive player of the week twice this season. Against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, he recorded 5 tackles, an INT, a fumble recovery (on a coverage team), and a blocked PAT. The fate of the Bears offense rests on the shoulders of Jr QB Breylin Smith. While a playmaker, he has thrown 8 Ints on the young season. His receivers are exceptional, and in my opinion, the Bears have perhaps the best pair of receivers (Tyler Hudson and Lujuan Winningham) that ACU has seen this season. They certainly have more yards from scrimmage and catches than anyone on SMU. The Bears passing system isn’t all that technical: - Short routes toward the sidelines
- Play action
- Yards after the catch
- Shot plays
They can be proficient with underneath routes if a defense overcommits to covering receivers on the outside. Darius Hale (5’10 215) anchors their running game. The ASUN has already honored him as a freshman of the week. In every game that UCA has had with the Cats, the Bears coaches have made in-game adjustments that have ground the ACU attack to a halt. And as is well-known on this board, UCA offensive coordinator Ken Collums takes special pride in playing the Wildcats. On paper, the Bears should take care of business and get back in the win column. If they have any hope of the playoffs, they cannot lose again this season. But the Wildcats have different plans. Behind a physical, team-wide effort, ACU can get a breakthrough win in this game. The coaches and players will have to have a great week of preparation and attack the game with fierce intensity.
