Yes, stopping the clock was inexplicable. I thought for sure that would lead to another UCA score and was the wrong decision at the time.
As to Bogeyman's points, I am in agreement. The team looked like it just gave up. We started the game like the team we could be and moved the ball well. Our defense was really surprising except for the dinks over the middle where they had cleared it out for some passes. I don't know why we shifted to cute plays. It was as if we thought, well this offense is working, let's try something else. After we showed our weaknesses and play calls, we turned into a completely different team. Defense evaporated and our play calling and execution fell apart. I kept having those terrible feelings that our players were so deflated that they might have been questioning why they had chosen to become Wildcats. That is how deflated I felt walking out of the stadium. Quite a job ahead to rally the troops after this one.
I guess I would like to hear a postgame interview with the coach that faced these issues head on and not some namby pamby discussion that coats over the problems and the loss. As much as I hate to admit it, Stone Earle had his weakest game, and showed he was human. Yes, our guys dropped some passes but he made some throws that were ill-advised. I can think of several.
I bleed purple and white, but an old thought from decades ago came flying back into my head when leaving... once again, I just want a football program our Physics Department can be proud of.

I have not been inclined to criticize play calling …… until now. What were we thinking in the 3rd quarter? We have 3 good backs and a good to very good offensive line. Why didn’t we come out and establish our dominance? 3 yards + 3 yards + a short pass for a first down. At some point one of the backs breaks for 20 yards or more. Yet we have to try WR screens or trick plays that UCA had totally figured out. So it’s 3rd and 10 or more every 2nd half possession. We use no clock time and along with the turnovers allow the Bears 17 more plays in the 2nd half. To be fair, they figured out that we have no vertical game and started playing 8-9 up close to the line of scrimmage. 3 turnovers is unfortunate but those things happen. I hope Stone can rebound. Talked a bit to his dad last night who was super disappointed as you might expect. But he has a lot of confidence in his son and is sure he will come back strong..

I do not blame Stone for the turnovers. He is an awesome quarterback, especially considering he is a red shirt freshman, as well as at least 5 of his linemen. He was placed in untenable situations. He is small fast with a good arm and good accuracy. You don’t put him in plays where he is having to be in a scrum or passing into traffic with a short field. A good coaching staff calls plays that match the talents of their personnel. It seems that we have issues with this.

Ken Collums now 4-0 vs. his old school with three comebacks. 34-0 in 2017 ... 16-7 in 2018 (outscored ACU 10-0 in 2nd half) ... 31-30 in 2019 (after trailing 27-17 in 4th) ... 42-21 in 2021 (down 21-7 in first half). Ken was not part of the UCA staff in 2017. He joined in 2018. This was his first game vs ACU in which no players on the Wildcat roster were ones he recruited.

Point blank, ACU wet the bed and stained the sheets last night. I said that this game would test our maturity and progress and we horribly failed on both sides. UCA has been a 2nd half, comeback team for a long time now, and we knew it. I am glad we came out swinging but that meant nadda at the end of the game. Dorrel stopped what was working in the 2nd quarter and the game was lost then. The defense started to stop attacking in the 2nd quarter as well. We played on our heels after the first part of the 2nd quarter.By the 4th quarter the defense didn't exist. Please, please... someone take that stupid playboard away from Dorrel. Looking down at him lost as to what to do while staring down at that board is embarrassing. He needs to actually be watching what is happening on the field. Last night, every coach failed. UCA figured us out and never looked back. ACU couldn't figure out their left hand from their right hand. I called that we would lose the game last night. That's not the issue. The issue is just how bad our regression was and how bad we were at all 3 phases of the game. Special teams wasn't as bad as offense and defense, but we completely fell apart, and that's unacceptable. People may think I am being too harsh, but it's the harsh truth. Dorrel is done, he's inept, just like Clint Brown last night. I would be more harsh on Lamberson, but I really think it's dorrel making the decisions during the game. I agree that Stapp was a beast, but he can't do everything. Stone learned some tough lessons last night. Yes, he is a REALLY good QB, but he needs to own his turnovers, learn from them and move on. The worst is that ACU showed that we had talent last night, just not the capacity to pull off a continued progression.

Inability to adjust and going way too cute caused us a game. As others mentioned, the stupid throwback screen play where we went from 2nd and 2 to 3rd and 7 or 8 was the turning point. We never got back on course after that. We were the aggressor so much early on, so why abandon that for gimmicky plays? It's bad coaching. With the questionable playcalling both on the offensive side and the defensive side, it seems as if each play the team is already backed into a corner that is hard to fight out of.
When Coach D was hired I remember seeing the different things about how after a couple of years he'd have ACU on the right track and heading toward being a good D1 program. Now in year 4, I don't feel like there is a drastic improvement. I know people may not like it, but at some point, there has to be some vocal presence that is pushing for a change in the HC spot and maybe throughout the program. Some may say that going after someone's livelihood isn't a good thing, but when results aren't there, they aren't there. You can even tell me "You wouldn't like it if there was vocal outcry for you to be fire and replaced at your job" and you'd be right about that. I'm also not a D1 football coach in the state of Texas either.

Maybe it will just convince them that we are a basketball school since we don't appear to be a football school sadly.

Just one last thought. I don’t think our guys gave up. The bears ran 41 plays in the second half compared to our 26. They just ran out of gas. In a typical game the defense might be on the field for 30 ish plays.

The turnovers were the reason they were on the field so long.

I’m okay with the board expressing frustration after a loss that should have much closer and given the Cats a chance to win. And I don’t think we should give the coaches a pass. But Oscar and I never wanted Cat Chat to turn into a forum for calling for coaches to be replaced. Coaches are people too and what we say here does get back to them. So before you post negative stuff about coaches, take a deep breath and review your post and ask yourselves if there is a better way to frame your thoughts. Thanks for making Cat Chat the most civil and thoughtful forum in the country.
