At one time the turnovers were 9-9 and ended 15-28 in our favor. We won the rebound battle by 2 but we had approx 10 more offensive rebounds. Quite a feat considering several times our talledt guy on the floor wss 6'5" or 6'6".

Have to give a little credit to UTA's defense. For a lot of the game they looked like a twin of our pesky gnat defense. I do, but we were having shooting problems before this game. It was still a great win and now we have a much needed return home.

Have to give a little credit to UTA's defense. For a lot of the game they looked like a twin of our pesky gnat defense. Absolutely, they were stout, but fouled quite a bit which was nice to see our FT shooting improve. That being said, we still missed a lot of shots that should have gone down. Open three's in particular. We need to hit those since we lack the height to drive consistently.

It would be nice to have one of their athletic tall guys on our team. But we do amazingly well for not having any real height.

Said it before the Utah game…this team has to figure out a way to score efficiently. We no longer have a post presence and therefore we can’t score in the paint unless it’s a drive, and we miss a lot of our contested lay ups due to size. We need coryon and makhi to have good shooting nights to carry us. I really would like to see Stevie Smith on the floor. I really can’t imagine that the newcomers are that bad on defense that we can’t play them. Let’s try something to give us an offensive spark besides damien and Reggie on the floor together so much. McGlaughlin must be in the same boat as the newcomers as the true freshman is seeing playing time instead. We need another shooter.

Just the communication alone is difficult. The new guys will get there, but it'll take time. The philosophy of the program has always been you get in the game because of defense, you stay because of your offense. When the new guys have gotten on the floor they have looked a few steps behind. They will get there.

Some season stats after last nights game.
Field Goal %: 39% vs our opponents 43% 3pt %: 31% vs 38% FT %: 63% vs 70% Turnovers per game: 14.3 vs 22.7 for a margin of 8.4 Steals per game: 12.3 vs 7.0
Considering the three teams we have faced, some of these stats are quite impressive thus far. A turnover margin of 8.4 is crazy. We ended last season with a margin of 6.3 which was best in the country. I am not sure where we stand currently (I doubt we are first) but many teams numbers may be inflated based on non-conference opponents. However, shooting percentages across the board need to get better as has been mentioned at length.

The absence of Smith is odd. Known as a scorer and we certainly need that. Whoever said we don't need Daniels and Miller on the floor at the same time was right on IMHO. Our height deficit is a problem, more so on the offensive end. But our rebounding has been phenomenal. Tanner is a genius.

He looked pretty lost on defense. I think once he learns the defense he will be a much bigger piece of the puzzle, but I think the philosophy is it is okay if we shoot bad as long as we play good defense.

Yes, all three (Smith, DeDieu and Gai) looked lost but Smith also looked very fluid on the court. I'm hoping these guys get more and more court time because when conference comes around we will need subs to play a larger role to keep our main guys semi fresh. We play defense at such a frantic pace it's almost inconceivable the guys won't burn out some. But as Golding once said, "these guys are young, they don't get tired."

I keep asking about Richardson with no answer. Yes he can play under the bucket. He has the same skill set as Steele but is a little bigger (at least he seems to be bigger on the bench). He has a great outside shot but is not as "nimble" as Steele. Could give us some quality minutes and spell Simmons and Steele while Gai and de Dieu develop. By the way, Simmons gives it all he has while he is in. He is foul prone because he goes for the ball so often. Keeping him fresh should be a priority I would think. These are not meant as criticisms but observations. I think as the season progresses and Tanner trusts the new guys more this team will be super. Our offensive intensity will develop as more and more guys feel comfortable in the system.

I believe the offense will come around...and as has been said, our defense takes a while to learn all of the inner pieces. When this team starts clicking on both ends, it could be scary good!

Simmons reminds me of Charles Barkley. Looking at him you wouldn't think he could be as athletic as he is. He shoots well and rebounds extremely well even though he usually gives up 4 or 5 inches.
