Yes, all three (Smith, DeDieu and Gai) looked lost but Smith also looked very fluid on the court. I'm hoping these guys get more and more court time because when conference comes around we will need subs to play a larger role to keep our main guys semi fresh. We play defense at such a frantic pace it's almost inconceivable the guys won't burn out some. But as Golding once said, "these guys are young, they don't get tired." Those minutes they need to develop will come when we aren't in such tight games against tough competition. Our first three games have been high quality opponents that we could compete with. When we were less competitive in Utah we saw more younger guys, but that hasn't been the case the past two games. I suspect these guys will get more playing time in the games coming up, especially just before conference play.

All 3 opening road games were very tough. I am not sure that I expected the new guys to get that many minutes. Next game is at home against McMurray and I would expect that to give them some time to work out what they are learning in a game atmosphere.

Our free throw shooting was respectable last night 29-38 against 17-24 for UTA.
This is in contrast to the first two games where we were 8-17 and 6-13, while Utah and Texas A&M were 15-23 and 24-33 from the line, respectively.
While it would not have mattered against Utah, we lost to A&M because of free throw shooting and beat UTA because of free throw shooting.

64-36 and it wasn't close. They turned the ball over (21, -10), lost on the boards (35 vs 41), and shot dreadfully (FG: 28.6 %, 3pt%: 10.0 %, FT%: 52.4 %). Won't win many games with those stats.

I don't think that UTA was really an upper tier SBC team. I am still glad we won, but they were much closer to our level than some believe. They only beat SE Oklahoma by 4 points and they got blown out by bowth OSU and UNT now. Our win in OT was good, but still shows that we have room for growth.

We have a big hill to climb because we do not have big men that can see over that hill. If a team is patient and sets up their offense to get inside, we are going to be really challenged to defend against real talent. And while we may win some rebounds, last year we often scored off such rebounds. This year will be much more difficult. Our shooting percentage will likely continue to suffer since skilled bigs typically hit a higher percentage of their shots. Not sure how the year will play out but I am impressed by our tenacity, just worried about what happens when a team dominates us in height and has skill to back it up. UTA did not really seem to know how to use their bigs and they were not playing at a high level. The WAC has some very good talent under the basket so we will be challenged. I love to watch our hustle and our guys are truly skillful at what they do. We really need our bigs to mature at a much more rapid pace. I don't want them to wait until our super star guards have finished their careers. My theory is we need to take our "under the basket players" out to the expo center and have them practice cattle roping, throwing those big boys down and tying them up. Maybe bring a sumo wrestler in for rebounding competition. We seem too easily moved out of the way except for Simmons who is dwarfed at 6'5".

Our tenacity will always keep us in games but if a team has height and knows how to use it against us, the rebound advantage will be too great to overcome. I do like how Simmons fights for rebounds. He plays much taller than he is.
