The football season is over. Despite our frustration, we can’t read too much into the SHSU loss. They are so much better than anyone we played. Their average margin of victory is close to 30. Only one game was close - SFA. So here are my initial takes on the season.
1. At 5-6 the Cats finished where we all thought they would. What I saw, however, was that we had no close, exciting losses. We were not really competitive with any average or above average teams. C 2. The offense was terrible. We had no vertical game or game-busting playmakers so we were reduced to a kind of hybrid run/pass offense that seemed to be pretty easy to defend. Would Stone have mad a difference the last few games. Maybe. Was it scheme or was it players? The answer is yes. D 3. The defense was just overmatched in nearly every game of consequence- especially the front seven. We have pretty darn good DBs but the lack of pass rush left them on an island game after game. Isaiah Moffett is an emerging star. C 4. Hooray for the kicking game! Strong and consistent all year. Burke and Zepeda were great. We gave up no kicking TDs or even long runs. A
What do you think? What needs to be done?

Bigger, faster receivers. More weight on OL. CB's that can defend the pass. DE's that can pass rush. DT's that can stop the run. Tacklers!! A creative offensive coach. A better defensive scheme that doesn't rush 2 LB's every play and leave the middle of the field open time after time. A big time recruiter. What did I miss?

My wife commented that compared with the SHSU linemen, our linemen appeared to be “fun size.” Dorrel always placed his bets on lighter and faster linemen. I wanted ones with both size and speed. I still think FCS schools can get bigger linemen that have strength, speed and technique. We had more depth this year on our lines, but a lot of penalties called on our linemen as well as battles lost in the trenches. Maybe we do need to help invest in NIL deals, who knows... I don't know how much we ae going to overcome the recruiting issues we have been discussing even before Dorrel.

DLine tackles that can withstand these battles in the trenches. We seemed undersized in almost ever game.
At least one dynamic safety: a big hitter and playmaker that can be paired with Moffett.
A dynamic offensive system that creates indecision for defenders that can stretch the field.

I don’t have a lot to say, just that I cannot say enough about how bad our offensive scheme was. This more than anything else was our Achilles heel.
