We needed a tough game and got one. Longwood had won three in a row.

Great second half. They played hard. 13 offensive rebounds for them was close to their average, but otherwise we negated all of the bullet points listed to start this thread. Guys stepped up at crucial times.

The scary part of this game was that a team about our same size outrebounded us pretty soundly especially on the offensive end (13-3). Forcing 23 turnovers negated their rebounding edge. Steele is having real difficulty getting good position on both ends of the floor. Hard fought win by a group of winners. On another subject Evan did a great job calling the game. Can we hire him?

We were only out rebounded by 5 (37-32). I agree, we can improve, but not sure we are built to be a great rebounding team

We were only out rebounded by 5 (37-32). I agree, we can improve, but not sure we are built to be a great rebounding team Most of our lack of rebounding is because we turn around after the shot and run back down court to defend. We don't consistently hit the glass. We improved our rebounding later in the game. Our turnovers and FTs were clutch, but we turned the ball over quite a bit as well. This was a slugfest until we finally wore them down and frustrated them beyond recovery. After we pulled away, they couldn't do much. Every time they fouled, we made most our FTs, making it worse for them. **Proof of the slugfest was the crew cleaning up blood off the court at halftime on both ends...**

I don't believe I've ever seen this team not attack the glass on every shot that goes up. The only player who quickly gets to the backcourt is the one assigned to prevent fast breaks. If we had players doing what outsider contends coach Tanner would yank them immediately I'm sure.

As far as rebounding goes, someone needs to tell the fella who sits near the announcers and yells rebound every single play, and continues to yell it out of frustration after we missed the rebound, to take a bit of a chill pill.

Is the guy yelling rebound becasue they missed the rebound or didn't attempt the rebound? OFB = 3 DRB = 29 For Longwood: OFB = 13 DRB = 24

Maybe you guys didn’t see the stat I’ve reiterated twice….longwood is one of the top offensive rebounding teams in the country thus far. It’s the one stat that excelled in tonight as opposed to the doubled amount of turnovers off their average. We don’t win one category and it’s the only thing we can focus on?

Well said Wildcatter. They average outrebounding their opponents by 9 rebounds a game. Over 30% of their rebounds are offensive rebounds. Before last night, they were +39 in turnover margin, but they had 22 turnovers and we had 17. They were +31 in steals, but we had 11 and they had 6. They were shooting over 46% from the field and we held them to 33%.
Our team is small, thus why you are seeing the staff recruit bigger guards. Most games, we will likely be outrebounded, but when we lose the rebound battle by only 5, I wouldn't say they outrebounded us soundly.

I believe you are correct in Longwood's offensive rebound abilities/stats. I also believe other stats have been mentioned, like FTs. Turnovers were another stat that we did really well in regarding uping Longwood's average while also increasing our own. I'll add that we didn't score early off of the turnovers that we created, but we did remediy that in the 2nd half.

Anyone find a forum and comments about the game from LONGWOOD I could not find anything. I was wondering what they though of our intensity.

OK. I misspoke. Soundly was not the right term. My original post stated we were outrebounded (soundly--bad choice of words) by a team "about our size." It's the "about our size" that was the scary part to me. We are less than tall so I understand that taller teams have a real rebounding edge on us. I beg to differ that Longwood is "one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the nation." They have played as many patsies as we have and you build stats in 40 point blowouts (they have 5 of them) over lesser teams. In every game against similar or better competition they have lost (and I haven't checked all their stats but I bet they've been outrebounded in most of their losses). That said, I love our team, we play hard, harder and most times hardest. We break other teams will (I think we did this to a capable Longwood team last night) by the way we play. I cheer our team and am as big a backer as most of you. I've played basketball and know basketball and tried my best to point out a challenge we have (positioning is key in basketball). We shouldn't get outrebounded by a team of similar size when we give as much effort as we do. But some nights the ball just doesn't bounce our way and we'll get beat on the boards by a similar team. Happened last night. We'll win more than we lose when we stay within 5 rebounds, not sure about 10 on the offensive end (that's 10 more positions right there). I love our team!!! A criticism every once in a while ought to be OK but I'm a lightening rod to some, so I understand! Mercy, I need mercy!!!

I get it. They aren’t going to be a top offensive rebounding team all year, but they’ve done well so far. We also are top 5 in the country in average margin of victory but that doesn’t mention the fact we have played 4 D3 caliber teams.
We are small and we play hard but frankly we won’t be getting many offensive rebounds all year with our post presence and our defensive rebounding is based off of effort. We put up more shots than another team then they are likely going to put rebound us.
I think we played three decent low major programs at home these past few weeks. Three teams that will do well in their conference and three teams that played good team basketball and defense. Good prep for conference play which will be a gauntlet to start.
