We lost both of the last two games in the first few minutes of them. We came out flat and let them knock us off our game. Then, we try to play catch up the rest of the game until it's too little too late. We better figure something out before GCU and NMSU.

We didn't make the greatest shot choices at the end. Kept trying to drive it in and getting the ball blocked or stolen.

Very disappointing week, especially knowing we go on the road to play the two top teams in the conference next week. Another game where a lack of inside scoring presence hurts us. We tried to get Steele going early and when he didn’t hit any shots, he hardly played the rest of the game. Also couldn’t get many steals tonight which limited fast break points. On top of that when you have four players on the court at 6’3 or shorter it’s hard to expect to be able to drive to the basket or to be able to get rebounds. Going into conference play I would have been happy with a 5-3 start. Winning 3 out of the next 4 will be a challenge. After tonight's game, it is obvious we need to get some height for future seasons.

Puzzling why we would drive for the basket with our shortest players. Savion Flagg will likely play pro basketball -- amazing talent.

You’re right it’s not why we lost, BUT, with no post presence, we are finding ourselves struggle with cold streaks on offense lately. Kolton kohl was such a good offensive player for us that we now miss. Pleasant wasn’t as consistent on the block as Kolton was, but a strong frame at 6’7 is nice to have. Even Gayman at 6’6 last year could pump fake his way to some baskets on the block. Right now we have Steele and Simmons and neither are down low stalwarts. Steele had 5 points total this week after being POTW last. Not blaming him for anything, he’s not a true 5 like Kohl was, but when shots aren’t falling it seems Tanner goes with the small ball.

So, we have to gameplan and execute better. We have faced really good talent and height before SFA and Sam and played better against them. We need better post play, but we can still win. If we don't figure something out, this can turn into a long mediocre season. Tanner was so sure this team was going to learn from Thursday. It didn't seem like we did from the very start of this game. Maybe we got lucky the first OOC part of this season and we really didn't deserve to be on an 11-game win streak. I would love for us to have a chance at the dance again, but it seems that we have hit some sort of wall, call it whatever: loss of post presence, poor game planning, incorrect shot selection, got ahead of ourselves....whatever. There is no reason that we should have lost BOTH the SFA and SHSU games. I think we could have won both; but needed to walk away with at least one of these games as a win. If we figure it out and win against GCU and NMSU, GREAT, but we didn't figure it out this week.

Height would help, but that's not why we lost these last two games. We were outrebounded 34-25 tonight. If the rebouds were even we would have won easily tonight. Like I said before, we may not need to worry about rebounds, especially ORBs IF we take care of business on the other end and defend/shoot well. When we don't do that, the lack of rebounding, and second/third chance shots, will sink us every time. Sam was 8-26 in ORB-DRB. ACU was 6-19 in ORB-DRB. Then we had 11 turnovers and were outshot in each category but FTs. Sam got 11 points off of turnovers, we got 8. We live and die by our turnover margin and our points off turnovers. When we can't rebound or shoot AND we lose our bread and butter, we lose. Gai isn't strong enough inside yet. Simmons and Steele help, but still can't get it done. We will have to figure out how to increase our shooting with better shot plays and selection until we get someone inside that can make a difference.

I actually think the two losses this weekend are explained pretty easily and it has little to do with rebounding. We are typically out rebounded because we take 10-15 more shots per game than our opponents. We average +11 in turnover margin. That’s 11 shots that our opponents don’t take. We could expect 5-8 defensive rebounds that just never happen.
No, we were beaten because the two teams did something they haven’t done all year —- 10 3 pt shots made each. Both teams will typically make 5-6 per game. They both lost to Tarleton and shot less than 30% from 3. Almost 50% against us.

We cannot shoot the way we have in the first half of these last two games, allow the other team to shoot at the rate they have and expect to win. I love the way Coach Tanner talks in his post game pressers. He is honest about the performance, but doesn't leave his players out to drive. Time to go back to the drawing board and figure out how to fix the first half woes.

Cats haven’t lost consecutive home games since February of 2019 and have not lost consecutive conference games since February of 2018.

Yep, rebounds don't really matter when you play good enough defense to stop their shots. We didn't...

We do need to see if there is any way that we can limit how these teams are making our defense chase the ball. Especially early in games, they are getting the comfortable shots that they want. Making a few more contested layups and threes would be a big plus (as this is what our opponents are doing). We are seeing our opponents grow confident on offense and on the break as their defenses string together stops. The Cats rebounding and overall toughness will be tested by these tough road games at Grand Canyon and NM state. GC is an elite offensive rebounding team.

Rebounds always matter no matter how you try to spin it. Having 3 players on the court at 6' might work well with a couple of 6'9" players to clean up the mess but we don't have that. A short guard driving the lane among the trees worked last year when teams had to be aware of Kohl and Pleasant. We don't have that presence this year. We are a good team, a gritty team, a team that can win against bigger, taller teams if things go right. But we have a severe weakness. We are short in a game that demands length. Not only are we short, our guards are inconsistent 3 point shooters. Except for Mason our most consistent 3 point shooters are Simmons and Steele (our post players) and what happens when your post players shoot 3's; you have no height under the basket for rebounds. We played significant minutes last night with our tallest player on court being Simmons and he spent significant time trying to get outside shots. We nearly won the game last because we are fighters. But with no "tree" presence in the paint, we'll continue to be at a disadvantage in lots of games.
