Not sure about positioning for our new OL recruits. Can anyone provide insights on who is a tackle and who is a guard and who might be a center? Where will the competitions be? Hazard a guess on our OL 3-deep.

Hazard a guess on our OL 3-deep. Good question. I don’t believe any of our transfers played tackle at their former schools. Ghirmai played tackle in high school. Sakari also played tackle in high school but was moved inside in college.

This probably isn't completely accurate, but here is how things were looking in the spring, plus where the transfers and incoming freshmen played previously
OT R. Moore Howerton Wy. Tate Sakiri Dyl. Kinney
OG Thielen Pullen Hatten Ty Smith Zotz Yanta Fogle
C Ghirmai Girty J. Andrews

Sakari also played tackle in high school but was moved inside in college. The Guard vs tackle position change does not scare me too much. The positions are pretty similar. In run blocking the guard and tackle work together a ton and often switch off responsibilities for the down lineman or line backer depending if the defense is giving you an even or odd man front from their alignment. Pass blocking is the obvious difference with the tackle getting to face the usually speedier outside rusher. In my experience though, the technique is not that different and generally the same rules apply in pass blocking, like playing half the man, how to maintain inside leverage and how to set your feet and balance points. The only difference at tackle is you get considerable more time before they are on you as the outside rushers set up wider and you can give a step more ground before you have to hold the line with the rusher.
The bigger concern for me is Center and if we have experience there. I played all three positions on the O line at ACU and my year at center was certainly the most difficult. The biggest difference beyond snapping the ball is the fact that the 1 Technique is on top of you immediately. There is no space to operate. I fully underestimated how much of a difference the 6 to 8 inches the guard is allowed to set up behind the center makes in your ability to get your feet, hands and posture set before contact on pass blocking. How much more time you have to set your punch to slow the defensive lineman. Also, you can't really play half a man at center and plan to run somebody wide of the QB if they take an outside rush as that still collapses the pocket.
As long as we are strong at center, the guard vs tackle thing will work itself out.

What do we make of Kelley not being announced? Does he need a course or grade to be eligible?

We've added bodies to every position group except the one we needed most (DT).I realize we're still looking but we are under a month away from fall camp. We added Charcandrick West several years ago after fall workouts began so it's not inconceivable we could still add players but time is short. 2nd thought--if it is true that there is a "meet and greet" and explanation of strategy and recruiting meeting for the more important fans, I hope those present can get a feel about how our coaching staff thinks this team has come together. I'm hopeful we are much, much better but have enough questions to be really anxious.

I’d be surprised if our staff hasn’t thought of making such a move since time is running out and we still don’t have any depth at DT. Maybe those who attend the strategy meeting can ask about this?
