We win!!! Quite a spring for our ladies--they finish 2nd, 5th, 2nd, 1st, 2nd (by 1 shot) and 1st. Now on to conference.

How do you win a golf tourney? You finish 1st in par 3 scoring, 1st in par 4 scoring, and 1st in par 5 scoring. You lead the tourney in number of pars and are 2nd in number of birdies. That kind of scoring will win lots of tourneys. Congrats to Manon Guille for coming back from two 79's to shoot even par today. Kate Pickrell had her best overall tourney with a 7th place finish at +5 for the tourney. Delaney Martin finished in 6th place at +4, Ryann Honea tied Kate for 7th at +5 and Jiyu Han finished in 14th at +7 even though her scores did not count.

Our inaugural season for ACU women's golf is nearing an end. We can extend our season with a win at the WAC conference championship beginning Friday. We enter the week with 4 wins for the season, a momentus accomplishment for a 1st year team. This week we'll be playing a course, The Rim, in Payson, Arizona that sits at about 5,000 ft elevation, which means the balls will fly further than usual (about 6% further for a 250 yd drive or 15 yds). I believe that extra distance from the tee should help our girls because their short games are excellent. My concern for the week is our par 3 scoring which has been somewhat inconsistent (we did finish #1 in par 3 scoring last week). We enter the week ranked #113 with GCU ranked #83. We faced them in one tourney this year in which they beat us by 24 shots (they finished 1 and we finished 5 in the BGSU tourney in Arizona). SFA seems to be on a good run and California Baptist has had some good tourneys but I think this is a 2-team race. Will be interesting who are the 5 counters for us and if we'll sub if a player is having a bad tourney. What a feather in our cap if we could pull off a win and go to a regional. This is not out of our reach. A good 1st round would be be a beautiful thing. By the way, The Rim, goes thru the largest Ponderosa Pine forest in the US and it's in red rock country so it ought to be a beautful walk for our young ladies.

Will there be a home advantage to GCU?

I'd think, yes. They are use to the thin air and my bet is they've played mountain courses near them.

Payson, and the Mogollon Rim, are some of the most beautiful scenery in the Country...

I hope, if there are some mountains and the course in a valley, that our coach explains and shows the girls how to pin-point the dominant mountain. What looks flat always breaks away from the dominant mountain. I remember playing in Telluride with the local pro and he pointed out the dominant mountain. I thought my eyes were messed up but I putted exactly as he said and sure enough the ball sometimes broke up hill in my eyes, but it truly was breaking away from the dominant mountain. Play Castle Pines sometime and you will be shocked at the effect.

Interesting pairing this morn for the opening round of the WAC tourney. ACU and GCU are playing together as twosomes teeing off with 1st group at 9:00 am (11 am Central). The rest of the field tees off in threesomes. This indicates that the WAC committee things ACU and GCU are the favored teams.

Really starting poorly. +6 after only a few holes. GCU is +3 for those same holes. Maybe some jitters for 1st time conference tourney.

We've settled down and are only +5 right now with 3 players thru 9 and 2 others thru 6. It will be hard to know how we stand because of how teams started and because they are only posting scores after every 3 holes. Right now only CBU is ahead of us but they've only played 3 holes. We are even with GCU.

Picked up another shot with a birdie from Ryann Honea, so we are +4 with only Martin yet to finish 9 holes. Scores are Honea -1, Han E, Williams +2 (started with an eagle on 1st hole), and Martin +3.

Delaney birdies #9 to go to +2 and we pick up another shot on the field. We are now +3 after being +6 after our 1st 3 holes. At the end of 9 holes we are 4 shots ahead of GCU.

We are now in 1st place over all teams who have played at least 3 holes.

Disastrous 6 holes for Han. +7 for her last 6 holes after being even par for her front nine. We've gone from 1st to 9th.
