I have been hoping for women's golf for a while. I am curious to see future hires and our ability to recruit. Very exciting stuff.

The addition of sand volleyball was one of the worst decisions made by Lee -- no facilities, no scholarships, only a few regional schools playing. Women's golf was a no-brainer and should have been done years ago.

Yep, woman's golf is a fine decision. I love golf and we have fine facilities for players to practice on. I wish we had done this sooner. Billy Olson's daughter is a super talented golfer. She could have been a great one to build a team around. Maddi Olson was all-state twice at Wylie High School. She now plays for SMU. The incoming young lady from Mason might be both a golfer and basketball player???

The release was a bit vague about coaching so my guess is Tom takes a title similar to Juan Nunez and becomes Director of Wildcat Golf and a women's assistant is hired to office with Mason.
Here are some names Athletics maybe should consider.
Rob Bennett (former ACU assistant, now at Louisville)
Cory Churchman (Abilene native and Cooper grad at DBU - best DII women's program)
Jenna Young (Sam Houston State)
Paola Cortes-Ortiz (UTRGV)
Lyndsey Hunnell (Campbell)

Coach Shaw told me he has no interest in coaching the women's team but "will see to it in its infancy to make sure it goes in the right direction."

Maddi Olson has not played many tourneys for SMU in her 1st 2 years (only 3, I think). Maybe a change of scenary would be good for her.

I would think it will be easier to recruit for women's golf more than beach volleyball. Plenty of high schools have girls golf. Not surprisingly, Tristin Keller was a member of Mason's state championship golf team. Is there any sport that girl can't do?!

I heard today that Maddi will no longer be on the SMU golf team, but I was told she wanted to finish her degree at SMU -- she has an academic scholarship of some sort. Maddi's play became inconsistent in college. She could be the leader one day and shoot in the 80's the next. She could always hit the ball a very long way, occasionally 300 yards. She is a tall and slender power hitter. It will be exciting to see who we attract with our new team.

Tristin shot a 93 for Mason in the one-round 2A championship. One of her teammates shot 81 and the medalist shot 79. So Tristin probably needs to focus on basketball.

Agree. By the time a student is a senior in high school, they need their golf game pretty well honed. Tristan shooting a 93 is a bit of a stretch.

I don’t know the conditions, of course. But 2A golf teams aren’t very deep.

Definitely wasn't trying to say Tristin could play D1 golf. Just pretty amazing how well rounded of an athlete she is.

The safest path for recruitment of women's golfers is clearly South Korea. Do we have any missionaries or ex's there?

Has there been any talk of adding men’s soccer? (Sorry to put this on the women’s golf page.)
