This is a prime example of how ACU recruiting confuses me and sometime just misses the boat. Wyatt Simmons is a rising Sr at Harding Academy - Searcy, AR. His dad is the head football coach at Harding Univ. Wyatt has offers from Harding, Liberty, UAB, UNLV, Miss St, Florida St, Auburn, Arkansas, UTSA, Tulsa, OU, Arkansas State, Southern Miss and SMU. Where's ACU? Late to the dance. I'm sure if someone had given our coaches his name, they would have said, "he needs to try to make it down to one of our camps this summer so we can look at him." This kid is textbook ACU -- CofC, strong faith, strong student, strong leader (my brother in law is his youth minister), strong family, CofC secondary school, etc. He is most interested in the "culture" of potential programs. Could ACU snag a guy like this? Who knows, but definitely not if we're not even aware of him. How are we not directly connected with Lipscomb Academy, Harding Academy, Greater Atlanta Christian and many more? I met with the two LA coaches about ACU. They said, "we have a lot of guys that would like to consider ACU, but we never hear from them." I got the two coaches contact info and emailed it to multiple coaches. I never heard anything, but more importantly those two LA coaches never heard anything.

They should already know about him! AND the quote in my original post has been the consistent response I've received from ACU and the coaches.

These coaches do not come from a church of Christ background, so the thought they will know him because of his church of Christ background is not a thing. Over 75% of the student body is not from a church of Christ background now. And now there are several types of churches of Christ. The traditional ones and those that use instruments in worship. 10 years ago, yes, the coaches then and the university would be at every church of Christ church and school in the country, Now, not so much.

Thanks for the cofc history lesson. By the way, you're wrong about the "over 75%," but that's not the point. Did I say that they should know about this young man because he goes to a cofc? Uh, no. It's one factor, but he's low hanging fruit and if you are a coach at ACU and don't know of the university's history with the cofc, then that is a MAJOR oversight. Did you read what the LA coaches said about ACU? They have players telling them they'd like to consider ACU...WHY? I worked for 6 years in Advancement and met with Head of Schools all over the country. The CofC schools begged us to recruit their athletes and more importantly to go after their students. We've done neither.

Not trying to make you defensive. ACU decided 10 years ago that they wanted to look more like Baylor, TCU, etc. I know that because I too worked for ACU and sat in meetings where these decisions were discussed and made. They want to compete with those bigger schools. Traditional church of Christ students will go to Harding, LCU, etc, not ACU. I consistently heard, we are not worried about what OCU, LCU and Harding does; we aren't trying to compete with them any longer.
I do agree with you that the coaching staff must recruit the best players available to them. With the offers he has, I do hope the staff shows interest. However, the fact that he is church of Christ will have little to do with their interest in him.

We hear this every year. Generally, there are only one or two prospects per year at out of state CofC schools and it's very expensive to proactively recruit them. So if the coaches and the player don't reach out, there's no value there compared to recruiting places like DFW, Houston, San Antonio and West Texas. Historically, efforts to recruit these places have zero success. We definitely have recruited Christian Schools in Texas and Oklahoma, however.
If it were truly important to the coaches they would come to our camps and get to know the staff and the school. Or at least make a phone call and hype their players.
Anyway, Mr. Simmons has offers from Arkansas, Auburn and FSU. Pretty sure he will end up somewhere like that or maybe playing for his Dad.
Besides, Coach Simmons knows how it works. There are only 2 CofC football universities so he knows how to get ACU to recruit his son. I doubt there has ever been any interest at all.

I get what TNCatman is saying, though. There is a historical connection to some of the CofC-related K-12 schools that ACU has not always done a good job of utilizing -- both for students and for student-athletes. I do think that some of the coaches do a better job than others. Coach Goodenough did a great job recruiting Meredith Mayes -- who is the grand-daughter of the Gibsons, of Gibson Health and PE building. It was helped in that regard with the Mayes' coming to the ACU campus for an unofficial visit when Meredith was just finishing her HS freshman year and the process was begun.
The current FB coaching staff has done a fantastic job in reaching out to Texas and OK high schools to re-establish connections that had atrophied under the previous staff. I believe that contact with Jordan Seawright, the FB Chief of Staff, is the best way to make suggestions about athletes AND schools that could use recruiting. I have had good luck with getting results from contact with Jordan. I also think that the current football staff is much, much more open to receiving suggestions on schools with a historic connection to ACU that are outside Texas.

I heard that Dallas Christian has three or four really good players and that some or all of them have offers from (several?) FBS schools. I wish that we would offer all of them regardless of what our chances of getting them are. Might get some good players and would be good PR for both athlete and general student recruiting at DC and the Eastern Metroplex area.
