A few things from yesterday-
1. Always good to get a win-always 2. Tyrin Bradley is a stud. I don't think he recorded a sack, but he was so close 5-6 times. 3. Golightly wants the ball; give it to him 4. Special Teams is a mess- 3 punts blocked in 2 weeks. Zepeda with another miss 5. Agree on the cheering. No one cheers. I don't get it, but something needs to change. Too many people thinking they are at church than at a football game 6. The band, and this will be a rant. So bad. Never seen a college band start a song 3-4 times in the stands, only to have to stop because they weren't ready to play. Also, what band walks out to the field? Yes it has been happening for 3-4 years, but just sad to see. Also, and I mentioned this in the fan committee, but why during the parade do they play March Grandioso. Play the Fight Song! Yes, you are marching in a parade and it is a very traditional song, but who cares. Play something the fans care about 7. Last, ACU messed up with spring pledging. Fall pledging made you have a student section. The pledges had to sit there, at least until the parade winners were announced. But doing that in the spring now gives you nothing on the visitor side of the stadium
Again, we won, we are 5-2 which is great. KP has a lot of talent and a lot to build on for recruiting. However, there are some obvious things that need to change

KP presser. At least he took a little credit for the 1 yard line debacle. I kinda get it, but still, when you know you are struggling don't let your pride get in the way. Whether or not we "deserved it", we had the chance to decide to do something unexpected and we chose not to on purpose. Hopefully we can begin to mature past such a mindset...

Both Coach Patterson and Kobe discussed the timing of the bye week coming at a great time. We should be near full strength going to North Dakota.

Both KP and Kobe press conferences sounded good. Always a good sign when the player keeps reiterating what the coach says is a good sign. Shows this team seems to be on the same page listening and respecting each other. KP goal of going undefeated at home staying alive. Glad to see we have a bye week coming at a good time to get back get healthy and get some things right. Love this team.

I love the respect that both KP and Kobe have for Peyton. Looking forward to seeing some of the new wrinkles of using him.

First game I’ve been to for ACU since 2019 (Can’t believe it’s been that long) but I was so used to yelling at Texas Tech games and leaving with an absolutely sore throat. Early on in the game I yelled a bit on 3rd down for our defense and got some interesting looks. Talked to the couple near us and they said it’s definitely not a football environment at ACU games. My experience is if you cheer at football games with any consistency, people around you will not only stare at you, they will leave. They did not sign up for that sort of fan environment. I've said it before, but it is worth repeating: the incessant scoreboard chatter de-incentivizes crowd activity. Though it's trying to charge up a crowd that is seething to win, our masses tire easily of the clip-between-every play noise and the erratic play on the field. A blaring scoreboard only works in tandem with other game day elements to raise the electricity in the room. Add too much voltage and the crowd is dead. (I should add that I'm grateful that someone is listening and they are letting the students on scholarship in band play more. The last two seasons they hardly had any role at all.) For their part, I do see parents of players taking up an active and engaged role in cheering. I hope when basketball season opens that fans can settle into some different rhythms at Moody. Those crowds (especially the ones at Teague) do seem to show up with an expectation that their voice is wanted and matters. Last thought: I hope they will keep working on the field mic student shouting at the crowd. There are still bugs here that are keeping that experience from being effective. Overall, the game day presentation in stadium is starting to mimix bigger G5 schools and some smaller P5 schools which is the goal overall. It can definitely still be improved upon, but it is getting better. I completely agree with the field mic student. Gotta get that sound to a different level than what it currently is. Definitely hated that I couldn't yell and support the team without essentially be frowned upon. It just shines a light to an issue that our fanbase has. Being at a football game shouldn't be a quiet experience. If you can find the quiet experience at a football game, then most likely your watching a team that isn't that and/or it's a bad fanbase.

Yes, the student on the field who shouts into the PA system is far too loud. I am an old timer and do not want to lose my hearing so I have to plug my ears or it actually hurts. It is just a matter of decibels, so please turn it down a little. When they ask us to yell, it is not feasible since, in my case, I am trying to avoid more noise volume. I can't clap since my hands are covering my ears. I don't know about everyone, but it really is actually painful, so the relief is when the noise drops. Enthuasism at a bit lower volume might get the crowd to participate more... RC, I agree with you. Overall it's a good gameday presentation, just have to get the sounding right. I think the louder sounds are fine IF the crowd is already very engaged and participating, because then the loud sounds compile with the loud enthusiastic crowd to essentially keep building each other up more and more. It doesn't really work the other way around though where loud music builds the hyper active crowd engagement.

Does anyone know a site for Southern Utah's football blog or forum?

However, there are some obvious things that need to change FWIW, I was in the band thirty years ago. We played "Grandioso" then. Some would say that makes the song an ACU tradition, but my heart has never been in playing that march (and that's not because UT plays it). I do think the Big Purple faces specific rules about how long they can play into the play clock. That may account for some of the stopping and starting.

You are correct JCat, but this was different. The drum major would start directing, and only a few would start playing. They would then stop and the band director would say, "eyes on us, eyes on us." Truly embarrassing. I almost yelled once, but knew the entire stadium would hear me
Here's a thought, if you like to yell like I do, what if we all sat together. I only sit in general admission, unless someone gives me tickets.

The student section, I don’t understand. I have to think that if we became a year in, year out winning program, the student section would be more consistent and more willing to stay for the entire game. I also think it is important for the football players to be involved and have relationships with the rest of the student body. When I played, there were only a handful of us that were involved with the majority of the student body…
As far as the home side of the stadium and especially the Club Level, I think it’s pretty hard to have any type of “raucous crowd” when everyone sitting in that section is someone you know, or your spouses family knows, or your parents know, etc… No one wants to do anything that could be seen as embarrassing with such a tight knit ACU community. Not much of a solution there but I think that has a large part to play in the quiet crowd.
Winning helps everything…

I've hesitated to say anything negative about the Big Purple because I know some of you on here were members, but in my opinion, it isn't a very good band sadly. I don't know if they just don't practice much or what but I wasn't impressed with the band in the 80's and still am not. I'm probably spoiled because my 6A high school has an excellent band, as do the other schools in our athletic district, so I've seen some pretty good bands. ACU's band doesn't hold a candle to them.
I know I've probably infuriated more people on here with this post than anything negative I could have said about the football team...

Back in the 60’s the Big Purple was a big deal. Under band director Fessor Fry the band’s Half performances were often the highlight of football games.

I have started a GoFundMe page to help me raise bail money. I was arrested at the ACU game on Saturday for disturbing the peace and excessive noise. I was unaware that Abilene had an ordinance prohibiting yelling and cheering at football games. I have always wondered why it was always so quiet at ACU football games and sadly, now I know. I would appreciate any donations to help me out here and encourage you to let your friends know about this. There is no need to put anything about it in the Optimist as it occurred in the second half of the game.
