I also know that on paper we look "thin" at LB (Campbell says we are weak there) but we do have quality, if not numbers. With Moore, Young, Coheley and Kelley returning and the addition of Wilhoit (transfer) and the 3 young freshmen (Woody, Koumado and Morton) we could be more solid than people think. Injuries could be our undoing at this position. I'm really excited about adding Wilhoit to the mix. 42 played in the December 2021 state championship game at 227. The bye week, following the 2022 ACU Homecoming game where he got hurt, he was weighing 217. He didn't have 10 pounds of fat to lose in that time frame. Right now he is 230. He shouldn't suffer the same type of injury again now that he's back to being as strong as he was in HS. The Mike spot is just brutal on the body though. DCTF puts together a nice publication but I'm amazed at how people take them so seriously. They don't do their homework. They can't because they try to cover too much.

It's difficult to rank this conference. There are likely going to be a lot of close games. One win could be the difference between second place and fifth place. Here are the final rankings from this set of composite computer rankings from last year. Dave Campell has North Alabama (1-10 last year) finishing above the two Utah schools. Did UNA make a lot of improvements this year? They were clearly the worst team in this group last year. Source: masseyratings.com/cf/compare1aa.htm33. Austin Peay 36. Eastern Kentucky 41. Abilene Christian 44. Central Arkansas 51. SFA 54. Southern Utah 57. Utah Tech 60. Tarleton State 111. North Alabama

Maybe this has been answered before, but I was wondering what would our 7-4 record have been had our FG kicking average been what is was the prior year? We lost three games by three if I count correctly but I don't recall the effect of our missed FGs. Any guesses or analyses? The one I remember most was the missed FG at the end of the 1st SFA game that was returned by Xavier Gipson and resulted in a 15 yard penalty and a final field goal attempt on an untimed play that was the game winner. FGs were not a factor in the loss to North Dakota. But in the final game against SFA, we lost by 3 and Zepeda missed from 42 and 46.

So disappointing about those missed FGs but we had a fine season and a dramatic improvement last year and I feel good about this year. It is a good while before the first game, but I sure have a level of excitement I have not had in several years. The Patterson hiring was really a fine move it appears. I suspect the tougher schedule will be challenging but we just might be ready for it. Anyone else getting that feeling about this fall?
