While practice sessions will be gearing up soon, it still feels like being lost in the desert when we have no contests going on. Well, there are other metrics to enliven our lives about ACU, and here is one I always enjoy seeing:
"Abilene Christian is the highest-ranking university in Texas in a 2022 U.S. News & World Report assessment of institutions highly regarded for their commitment to student success. Nationally, ACU achieved Top 10 status in three and Top 50 in another of eight high-impact categories among 1,500 universities evaluated for the annual "U.S. News Best Colleges" edition. No other Texas university was named in the top 10 of any category."

Received a communication today from ACU concerning the $25 million gift from Kay Onstead that will name the newly formed Robert and Kay Onstead College of Science and Engineering. Kay and her late husband, Robert, have been very philanthropic toward ACU. The endowment will provide around $1.1 million a year in support of scholarships, dean initiatives, faculty recruiting and salary support, and research initiatives. The College of Science and Engineering is new -- when the College of Arts and Sciences was split into 2 colleges. The new Dean of the College is Charla Miertschin -- an ACU alum who has been the Dean of Winona State in Minnesota.
This will be the first named college at ACU. The new college includes Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Engineering and Physics, and Mathematics. Will allow even more direct impact on the sciences at ACU. The recent gift of $29 million from the Dukes Estate was earmarked exclusively for the finance department in COBA. So, there is still an opportunity to name COBA, if any of us on the board are looking for a place to spend $25 million, COBA is available.

The Onstead gift and College of Science and Engineering has been a dream for many, many years. ACU is truly a rising star and this is the kind of thing that lifts everything up. Thank you Kay, and watch what is coming ahead. Our University is truly stepping up.

Brite Divinity School at TCU is named after my great great great uncle, Lucas Brite. (I may be leaving one great out.) Those naming rights went for the big, big sum of $10,000 back in 1920 or so. It’s interesting that there have been far more Brite descendants (with various surnames) attend and graduate from ACU than TCU.

Addison and Randolph Clark, founders of Add-Ran Male and Female College (forerunner of TCU), were great something uncles of mine on my mom's side. Mom and I both attended ACU. We descend from the more conservative side of the family (she had many preachers from the "anti" branch of CofC in her family line). Mom really broke from the conservative line though as she joined the Methodist Church in her 60's! But still supported ACU all of her life.
