This is a strange post but it is about a question about recruiting. I was at a very distinguished scientific meeting this past week at the U. of Wisconsin, Madison. It was the celebration of yet another physics alumni of ACU. Big time people were there celebrating our ex-student who got his Ph.D. at Princeton. ACU was mentioned often and other famous graduates who were Wildcats were noted as well. At a dinner, physicists from other much larger universities came to sit with me and they all were interested in how in the world does a small school like ACU produce such outstanding graduates. How did we recruit them? How did they progress so rapidly? They have won so many National and International Awards. Admittedly, it was a giddy time to hear such things. I shared one particular aspect of ACU that larger schools were slow to implement and that was that we stressed high level research from undergraduates from freshmen to seniors, and ACU had a long history of research grants in physics. I have to say, our Physics and Engineering program is getting a lot of notice and it was a nice thing to hear about. ACU continues to rise in its reputation due to the faculty and the accomplishments of its students (and I think President Schubert plays a very important leadership role as well .) Also, the recently retired chairman of physics at U. Wisconsin was very excited and complimentary of our NEXT project. It was a delightful trip to a very prestigious University. I kept thinking, "Go Wildcats."
