I like the way our defense is flying around. What got into Cirby Coheley? Great 1st half for that young man. Jolly and Plumley played great too. We're playing lots of guys. I expected a Hut Graham sighting, maybe 2nd half. Where's 42?

I'm surprised they reviewed Taelyn Williams' catch. At this level, they usually miss those things. I saw it looked like a catch, but never thought they would review it.

225 yds rushing on 35 attempts. Very impressive 31-11 Wildcats lead.

Kinda sloppy 2nd half but still a pretty dominant win. Lots to like about this team. Lots to improve on.

We got to play a lot of substitutes and we ran out the clock right near their goal line -- a classy move by coach Patterson. Good balance with running and passing and the defense was very strong.

ACU was in total control throughout... The only thing stopping the offense was first-game penalties, drops, etc. The defensive had such a push up front that the Bears could only net 190 yards (and most of those when the game was well in hand).
Lots to work on, but the Cats may be "under the radar" for only a few more weeks.

Best football I’ve seen around here in a long time. Big, physical, and athletic…we check all the right boxes.

The one thing I didn't like was how sloppy the defense was on the final drive of the first half and a majority of the second half. They can't let off the gas pedal regardless of who the opponent is. Imagine if that was during a Conference game and the team went on to win because they scored on a drive the defense decided not to play.

Tremendous first game. We absolutely looked like the more physically dominant team, which is not something I have been able to say about ACU in the FCS era much. A few observations and complaint (and it is wonderful that my complaint is as tricky tack as it is because there was just not much to complain about).
1. O line was up to the top billing they received. On the TD run where the RB went like 15 years untouched on the little counter trey to the right side, it was blocked beautifully. It warmed my o line heart to see it. Perfect technique on the tackle to get inside leverage on the DE to open the hole. Guard and center worked perfect combo block for DT to seal the Mike inside. Pulling blocker sealed off OLB with good inside leverage. To watch thoese 4 blocker work it timed perfectly, with awareness of each other’s responsibilitiess and actually execute both 2nd level blocks showed not only their athleticism but comfort and timing that you get from having run the play together in practice 10,000 times as a unit. I had to rewind that play about 10 times just to watch the blocking, my wife thought I was crazy. My cancer riddle tail could have scored through that 5 yard tunnel created on the right side.
2. We had 3 RB with 10 or more carries and the lowest yards per attempt was over 5.0 yards. I was impressed by all three backs ability to hit the hole and drive the legs. They constantly pushed the piles all night long and finished just about every run falling forward. I bet they picked up 25 YAC yards just my pushing the pile. I knew we had some speed back there, but the power and desire to finish off the run was impressive.
3. The one negative I saw was just way to many penalties. We got 11 for 85 yards. The announcers were calling that first game jitters but I’m not buying it. NAU had like 2 penalties with a new regime. We just showed a lack of discipline there.

Agree there were way too many penalties and drops. I thought the play calling and execution was mostly excellent. Runners rarely went down on first contact by defensive players.
Speaking of announcers, I noticed we have a new PA announcer. Did the last one retire?

Not much more to add for the game last night. I see us as light years ahead of where we were concerning size, speed, scheme and aggression. I do think that we reverted back to some old ways a couple of times with our sideline passes, by not setting up enough blockers for them. Those were far fewer between though. If our running continues like last night, we will be really hard to defend. Our passing will get better when our timing improves, but it was still better over-all. McIver threw too many low balls when he was throwing short, but he is still commanding the offense better than last year. Both the offense and defense need to clean up their penalties and we did get soft defensively at the end of the first half and most of the 2nd half. I think we have some really great film to look at and learn from though. I think that will improve. Over-all, the game was never in question. The observations are just general and knowing it was out first game. Even though UNC struggled to move the ball, for the most part, they still protected the ball well and played pretty cleanly.

Positives--Kicking game- 2 punts ave 48 yds, no return. Only one KO did not go into end zone and runner was tackled before he reached the 20. 4 extra points, 1 FG--NO misses
DL- Butler, Massey, Oladele, Oke, Lawson, Warkenton clogged up middle allowing LB's and DB's to make tackles.
DB's-- played physical and fast. Several outstanding plays thru blockers. Plumley and Jolly were forces and Kelley played the spur well. Reynolds made a fantastic tackle in the 1st half on a play I thought was going for big yds.
OL--What more can be added, they dominated.
LB's--Even without our starter at MLB, this group played well. Coheley came off the edge with speed and tackled much better than last year. Moore and Wilhoit had some vicious hits (I believe Moore made the hit that injured their QB).
QB--Maverick seemed more comfortable. Threw some passes a little off target but all in all played a good game. Glad to see some "over the middle" throws. And I'm more than happy with Hawkins getting in some plays. We look strong at this position.
RB's--ran hard, quick and physical. The one back who got the least press was Banks and he seemed to be the quickest to the hole and a fantastic receiver out of the backfield. We are LOADED at this position.
TE's--again a very good game here. Was glad to see Lebechi get some snaps and disappointed Cooper didn't get a pass or two thrown his way. Caldwell looked HUGE to me. Castles played well.
WR's--Didn't play (Graham, W. Jones, Boykins, Williams). Surprised that T. Williams and McCasland played as much as they did. M. Jones still has a little rust. One end around and McCasland (why?) ran that. Taylor and Golightly continue to shine.
I don't think we "let up" defensively. I'd say our initial adrenaline wore off. We played at such a high level in the 1st quarter that it was hard to sustain. We'll get better playing all 4 quarters as the season wears on. This was a very good opener for us. It showed that we have the athletes to compete at a very high level. Will be fun to see us develop throughout the season.
