My posts were all in the 1st quarter, before leaving to attend a grandson's football game. Would have loved to have been in Abilene for the game, but grandson took precedence. Therefore, I am only able to comment on the 1st quarter and it was just about as dominant as any quarter I have seen in the D-1 era for ACU (not counting any of those games against McM or Concordia of Alabama). Based on that the first quarter only, this can be a very good Wildcat team. Right now, I feel guardedly optimistic. I do hope to watch the PVAM game and plan on being in the stands for the UIW game. Already have my ticket for PVAM and can't wait for both it and UIW, just like I can't wait for all the games this year. Everyone knows this team can be something special. I'll be at PVAM as well. My folks live in that part of the world.

We scored in the 3rd quarter to make it 31 - 3. From that point it was neither adrenaline nor fatigue. We shifted from an aggressive, in your face blitzing defense to just rushing four and sometimes 3 and keeping behind the Bears. Even so, they only scored once, helped by a 15 yard penalty. Backups were played liberally. Indeed, penalties were a problem but that’s fairly easy fix. I didn’t see any mistakes or blown coverage - just a defense that didn’t give up anything cheap. This👆. The crowd left, including 90% of the students. It was obvious we outmatched them. I think we got a little comfortable in the second half. We definitely lost our edge. Frankly, I’ve played on plenty of teams that made the same mistake only for that to never show up again. I’m not worried about a Patterson-coached team. This is a dang good football team.

As stated before I am new to ACU football so I don’t know anything about teams prior to this year. My thoughts on the game were this:
1. Great RBs and a line to run behind. Complimentary backs.
2. Special teams was good.
3. Seems there is speed on the outside just need to work on timing.
4. I think when it counted the defense was lights out. Even without 42 so it’s only going to go up. I remember, and I could have been wrong, but well into the game saying “ I think that’s their first first down. Maybe they had one before but it seemed like they did not.
5. Was a complete game from all three phases and you can’t be to critical of a 1st game performance. If I remember correctly ACU had never beaten them and someone mentioned not wanting a shoot out. Well you come away with both, the first win and it was one sided.
Just my 2 cents. Scratch em.

One other thing I was constantly impressed with was the outside pressure by the CB.
In the past, ACU has played very soft coverages and been killed by bubble screens and swing passes. Just seemed like we consistently gave up 5 yards a play before the CB could ever make up the 15 yard cushion provided.
At the game the CB's did a fantastic job of playing more press coverage and attacking on the bubbles. Several times they beat the blocker to the spot and blew up the play. Several other times they just flew around the blocker and made the tackle. The tackling on the outside was consistent as well. We got some guys in the secondary that don’t mind getting their head in there and wrapping up.

Don't overblow the criticisms. Every single one of them were put into context of the positives that the team did and with recognition that the game was never in doubt, as well as it being a first game. Everyone knows they are normal things that happen and correctible. They definitely weren't a negative reflection on the team.

Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that our opponents are scholarship players also. A good play by another team does not necessarily mean a bad play by us. Sometimes, its just a good play. The Bear touchdown was a tremendous pass and catch, for example.
I'm struggling to criticise a team that gave up 80 yards in the first 3 quarters. So a 4th quarter touchdown during garbage time looks pretty good to me. We definitely played looser but it still took the Bears 8 minutes to score. Then we hold it for more than 6 minutes and the game is over. Textbook.

Great teams get critiqued, even when they play well. Yes, even when the other team plays well too. Again, no one said the score, the game or our play didn't look good. You saying that makes zero sense. Also again, at least as many positives were given by us as well. Stop acting like people were complaining about the game.

Where is everyone? 4 new posters this year for game #1. 17 CatChat members who posted about game #1 last year are silent this year--what gives? Surely you guys and gals have some input. I miss wildcat86's detailed analysis. I miss mavsman53's player reports. How loud was the music dallasalum? kitten, were you impressed with the depth we showed? Did we have banana pudding or were the tacos stale? Attendance was about 700 more than last year but seems we ought to be above 8,000 for most games. I had a rehearsal dinner on Thursday night so I wasn’t able to keep up in the board. Looking forward to the rest of the season though. We looked dominant!

I do not understand why pregame info showed this being the third game in the series with Northern Colorado. ACU first played them in 1970 and now leads 11-6-1. The Wildcats won 10 of the first 11 games in the series.

Where can we find the record and scores of the games starting back in 1970?
