Did anyone see the interchange between Coach Patterson and I think the DL coach (don't know him by sight yet) before the 4th down play for UIW at the end of the game. The defensive play was being called in the sideline huddle and coach Patterson was shaking his head, no, no, no. The DL coach then said something to coach Patterson to which he looked "resigned." The play resulted in the final nail in our coffin (a first down pitch and catch that went to our 10 yd line). I'd loved to have heard that conversation.

Observations: Calzada throws a very catchable ball. He has a quick, smooth release that allowed his receivers to adjust (and catch). The UIW DL gave our larger OL all they could handle. It has been mentioned by all that Maverick had a bad game; the question is why? I think (my own opinion) that he waits until a receiver gets to his spot and then tries to rifle the ball into a tight space (instead of anticipating and letting the receiver adjust). Why, when there are only seconds left in the half and the only reasonable play is a pass, do we let a receiver get 30 yards behind our DB's? Why do we let a lumbering QB get loose on a 52 yd scoring run and not one of our "5" DB's can run him down? Why, after said run, do we let the same QB keep pulling the ball from a runner on an option play and don't have a LB or safety assigned to put a hit on him? Now, I have an answer to some of those questions. When you dedicate one or 2 LB's to rushing the passer it limits what you have left if the ball gets beyond the LOS, especially when your "nickel" back has very average speed. Just a Monday morning QB's musings. I hope we play a more complete game next week.

My two cents regarding the targeting call, it was contact to the head or neck of a defenseless receiver. Was a good call given the letter of the law of the rule.

I saw your interchange, but I am more interested in the words between UIW's #15 (Jaelin Campbell) and Our DB coach Julian Wison. Over about 3 different plays, Campbell kept coming over and having words with Wilson and motioning to him. It was after a call on us. My main beef is why didn't the refs do anything?

Bogey is on to something important. Every pass does not to be thrown at your highest velocity. The greats in our past had the uncanny ability to throw at the speed, and even arch, that was optimal. Remember John Mayes or Jim Lindsey? A great example from today is Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes. Great quarterbacks throw catchable balls. Maverick could be a great quarterback but timing and touch are critical. Throwing at your hardest speed is not the secret to a great passer.

Outsider, I will respond to that post about Campbell and Wilson
UIW threw a quick slant to Campbell and Jolly came over and blew him up. Wilson was letting Campbell have it. At first, I did not mind. So Campbell jawed back and gave him a thumbs down. Wilson continued screaming at him. Cassity had to come over and pull him back. Campbell then went off. He would walk over to our sideline, point, etc. As you said, it went on for 2-3 straight plays. The sideline official did nothing. Then, UIW threw a deep ball to Campbell and Jolly was called for PI. Campbell got up, walked over to Wilson and started jawing again.
UIW was talking all game. In fact, when Calzada scored the last touchdown, he turned toward our sideline and let out several expletives. Again, no penalty.

This intriques me. What should be done? What can officials do. Should they step in?

Like I said previously, they were confident. I don’t care how much they talked as they backed it up and we clearly folded by the end of the game.

I have no way of knowing if any of this happened Saturday, but if you go back and watch the UIW vs. N. Colorado game, there were at least 3 clear incidences of a UIW player spitting on an opposing player after a play. Not sure if call that confidence, but they did win the game.

This intriques me. What should be done? What can officials do. Should they step in? I saw the Calzada talk and gestures, as well as all the other talk. Physicality on our end stops that. And I don't mean cheap shots and classless football, either. They dished that out because we were willing to take it.

After one out of bounds play on our sideline a UIW player stood over our ball carrier and very obviously taunted him. An official was standing right there watching and hearing him. He did not throw a flag but kept pushing the player back onto the field. Why no flag?

My two cents regarding the targeting call, it was contact to the head or neck of a defenseless receiver. Was a good call given the letter of the law of the rule. What is he supposed to do when he is running full speed down field and the returners head goes from 6 ft off the ground to 3 ft off the ground in 1/4 of a second?
