At the risk of being labeled an old fuddy-duddy, I have a question. First my personal opinion. In another sport, basketball, we would have been benched for unnecessary celebrations. Today's football players do unique celebrations from signaling first down after gaining the required yardage -- a swing of the arm, posing for all to see, indicating first down like an official -- to coordinated dancing celebrations after a touchdown. Frankly I find such grandstanding unnecessary. My era was always taught to do something successful and then to act like you have done it before rather than celebrating, which was considered un-sportsmanship and petty. Today they even do prearranged dances, calling attention to themselves. My opinion is such actions should draw a flag but I, as previously mentioned, am an over-the-hill type. I just don't think all the show-boating is an acceptable way to play sports.
So, what do others think? Is it un-sportsmanlike, is it showing off, is it irritating to opponents and unnecessary, or is it perfectly Okay in this new world of self-indulgence?

I don't consider it un-sportsmanlike but do find it unnecessary. The most annoying to me are the defensive backs that "celebrate" like they did something great even when the receiver just dropped the ball. I'm old school with you on the "act like you've done it before". You prevented a receiver from catching the ball? Good, that is what you are supposed to do! Most current coaches seem to tolerate it because the younger generation of players like it.

Well, RC. Being more than 50 years older than today’s college players and despite having the good fortune to still be around this age group thanks to some part time teaching, I have concluded that I have no clue.
There is no doubt that things were simpler when I was in college. I don’t have to love it but if celebrating a touchdown or even a first down or pass breakup brings joy, It’s okay with me. Just don’t get in the opponents’s face and get penalized.

A fine rational answer. It was hammered into me that old bromide to act like you have done it before. That does not mean to show no emotion but to act a lot more like Christian McCaffery, a cool customer.

I don't like the continuous yapping that goes on. Watching bowl games has been tortuous. Fights before the game, fights during the game, fights after the game. Referees don't know what to do. Some games it seems flags are thrown almost every play (ie. Rice vs Texas St). Player assulted by another player after the game while team gathered for school song. Melee today before game Miami vs Rutgers. Where will it stop? Women's bsdketball player sucker punched when teams met for aftergame handshake. Stop the yapping before we lose all semblance of sport.
