Here are the key players for 2024- J. Lawson- Soph, 41 tackles (can play some DT as well) C. Cooper- Jr, 30 tackles in 8 games on defense
No one else had 10 tackles in the season- Dam. Hart- Sr Bowman- Soph Dubose- Soph Gambs- Soph Chr. Wright- Jr (UNT transfer)
Pretty crazy that the top 2 tacklers at this position were a true Freshman and a guy that began the year on offense. Lawson is such a good athlete for a guy his size. He could be a pivotal player for the next 3 years. Cooper seemed to be the player that applied the most pressure on opposing QBs. Really hoping for big things from him in 2024. Bowman and Dubose need to become impact players if this unit is going to be better than they were last year. I also think Gambs could be a big player for this group. He didn't play a lot, but there were moments where you could see his playmaking skills. It will be interesting to see what Wright could be. With a 3 man front, he is a bit undersized at the moment, so I am hoping he can add weight and strength to be a contributor.
This is probably the most difficult group for me to grade. Again, I really like Lawson and Cooper. But there are so many unknowns behind them. I am going to give them a D, but if I were honest, it is probably more of a C-.

I thought Lawson played well. I'm excited about Gambs too. I've been flabbergasted that a converted TE who has never played that position before did as well as he did. I'm really happy for Colt because I know he works his butt off. Hope that lights a fire under some of the guys that were recruited to play the position.

Elijah Sims has been repositioned to defensive end. He is listed on the roster as 6’2 240 but I talked to him recently and he has grown over last year. He tells me that he is almost 6’4 and weighs about 255 now. Definitely passes the eyeball test. He is huge.
