Everyone (including me) has wanted more info about our football team. So, a couple of days ago I dropped by Coach Patterson's office. His response when he saw me, "Hey, are you lost!" He had about 30 minutes before his next appointment and graciously invited me in to talk. So, here is his quite comprehensive overview of the state of the team.
Part 1 Offense
Quarterback: Rick Bowie hit the ground running when he was hired in January and started working with Maverick. According to KP, Maverick is night and day from last year. He is also being pushed hard by Carson Haggard who has shown out really well this Spring. It is a two-man race to see who gets the keys to the offense. He hopes to bring in another quarterback this summer but is very pleased with where this position is. I predict that Mav will be the starter at Tech but there will be a quick change if he reverts to last year's bad habits.
Running Back: If you want to see the coach get excited, ask him about his running backs. Of course Javeon Sunday, but he really happy with Jordan Vaughn and especially Isaiah Johnson whom he describes as a major upgrade. Don't forget, while Bowie has a reputation as a passing game coach, his teams were pretty evenly split between run and pass.
Wide Receiver: He could hardly stop talking about Blaine Taylor. The new offense will benefit him big time. Tre Cleveland will likely start on the other side and brings a great combination of size and speed. I mentioned that I was impressed with Nehemiah Martinez and he had nothing but good things to say. Hut Graham will definitely be in the rotation. Finally, two walk-ons, Luke Moffitt and Courtlin Scott had great camps. Scott is listed as 5'7 135 but this dude is fast with a capital F. He scored multiple times on end-around plays. Once in the open field, nobody could catch him. Moffitt blocked 3 kicks during the two Saturday scrimmages and was awarded a scholarship for his superior special teams play.
Offensive Line: He is confident about his interior linemen, both starters and backups. They had a great camp. They are still determining who will step up outside and hope to sign an experienced tackle by Summer.
Tight Ends: There are three tight ends now. Scholarship players Castles and Chidubem Lebechi and walk-on Gavin Waits who is playing on all the special teams. KP was very complimentary of Castles and looks for a good year from him. They expect to sign another tight end out of the portal. The new offense does not feature tight ends and we probably won't see two tight ends except on goal line or other short yardage.
Overall: While QB is not entirely settled, KP has no doubt that this will be a very high scoring group.
