Per ESPN, Satellite camps allow college coaches to travel long distances to work as guests at camps hosted by other institutions, but some in college football believe the camps allow some programs to skirt NCAA rules that prohibit colleges from hosting camps outside a 50-mile radius of their campuses. So, say, Notre Dame will send its coaches to work a camp at Georgia State as a way to enhance recruiting in a recruiting-rich territory like California, Texas, Florida or Georgia.
Coaches in recruit-rich territories like Texas want the NCAA to ban such camps. Meanwhile, lots of coaches from P5 schools work with local schools to put on camps. Last year ACU announced we would work with OU to put on a camp in the Dallas area. It was later cancelled. I don't think we have scheduled any this year....but many of our competitors do, Sam Houston in particular.
Any thoughts about satellite camps? Should we hook up with a big name out of state school for camp? Avoid the idea? Urge the NCAA to ban such camps in the future? It's the off season...looking for something to talk about related to fb.

I think these camps are a win-win for both the P5 schools and the smaller schools. Kids are very attracted to the big names, and many of them are not quite P5 level, but they may think they are. A kid that may not have any interest in ACU may come to a camp that has coaches from a P5 school. The P5 school may not have any interest in the player, but ACU may be able to evaluate them. Last year ACU/OU cancelled, but the ACU coaches partnered with Baylor coaches as well as University of Houston coaches at camps. I can assure you ACU's presence at those camps had an impact on recruits. I truly feel that a camp with a P5 out of state school could expose some good recruits to ACU that otherwise would not have had any interest in ACU.

The camps also foster relationships with P5 coaching staffs. For example, two cornerbacks are transferring from OU because of playing time. Knowing the OU staff might get us access to these players. Let's hope we get a shot at them.
