Drew Cummings, distance guy from Hebron HS - reported on TTFCA website, with a pic of him signing as well. Solid pickup for ACU. The kid had a good XC season this fall - his 5K XC time this year was the 20th fastest time in the state of Texas in 2015. Last year, in the district 6-6A meet, he finished 2nd in the 1600 and 3rd in the 3200, but that is certainly in the top 5 distance running districts in the whole state (the Flower Mound high schools are really, really serious about distance running). His times actually a whole lot better than Ryan Cleary ran as a HS junior and Ryan ended up getting 4th in the SLC 800 as a true freshman this past fall.

Volleyball - Marybeth Sandercox Softball - Sidney Holman Holman is a right handed pitcher from Belton. Sandercox is.a 6'0" inside hitter from Frenship. Do you know anything about Sidney Holman as a pitcher? What's her best pitch (drop, rise, curve, fast ball, change up)? What about her defensive skills? Do we have a pitching coach on staff part time?

I did see that Texas Tech signed Marissa Gale, from Western Texas College in Snyder. She was one that ACU wanted to sign. She was 3rd in the JC indoor 400 at nationals last year, 6th outdoors - not a superstar, but solid and would have given ACU a really, really good 4x400 this year. I think ACU felt we had a chance due to her being from Trinidad, where Reyare Thomas is from.
One other interesting Tech signee with strong ACU ties. Tech signed Norman Grimes, Jr - arguably the top track signee in the country this year. Norman won the World Youth Games 400H this past summer (international runners 17 years old and younger) with a stunning time of 49.11, as well as winning the Pan Am Games Jr 400H (runners 19 years and younger) and winning the 5A 300H. He had the fastest time in the U.S. for high schoolers for both the 3000H and 400H, plus was ranked #9 in the U.S. in the 110H. Does the name sound familiar to you? Norman Grimes, Sr was an outstanding safety at ACU in the late 70's and early 80's. Norman's Mom, Deedy Johnson Grimes, was an outstanding basketball/track athlete at ACU during the same time period, where she was a teammate with Wes Kittley. Tech signing Norman Grimes, Jr. may well be the top signing for Tech in the Kittley era. The Grimes also had a daughter, Katie, run for Tech where she had an All-American career as a 100 meter hurdler as well.

I have been watching websites like TTFCA.com and Dyestat.com to see if I can find some ACU early signing period signees in track and field. Thus far I have seen 2 -- Drew Cummings of Hebron HS and Sophie Morrow of Hico.
Cummings is a solid distance running prospect - in the District 6-6A meet last spring (and District 6-6A is a great track district with the Plano and Lewisville 6A schools), he was 2nd in the 1600 and 3rd in the 3200. His times are are state-wide competitive - he was ranked #34 among all Texas high schoolers in the 1600 (4:20) and #55 in the 3200 (9:35). He ran indoors some last winter and had the 10th fastest time in the indoor mile in Texas. He had a good XC season this year and had the 20th fastest time in the 5K XC in the whole state, but had a disappointing state XC meet, only placing 65th in 6A. His HS times should place him at the top of the ACU cross country team this coming year, if he can translate his HS times in the 5K over to the longer 8K/10K distance of college.
Sophie Morrow is the defending 2A state champ in the PV for Hico, which is a surprisingly strong pole vault town, home to a pole vault club that draws athletes from all over central Texas. Her vault of 11-9 was ranked #25 among all high schoolers in Texas. I have seen her vault 12 feet in a pole vault only meet. Her brother, Sonny, was the LSC vault runner-up for McMurry in that one year that McM competed in the LSC in track as an affiliate member. She should compete for points immediately at the SLC meet.
What I don't know is if ACU signed any immediate midterm help - usually that would be from the JC ranks. As I mentioned above, I know that ACU hoped to get Marissa Gale from Western Texas, but she signed with Tech. I hope that ACU picked up a few kids from the JC ranks for immediate impact this spring. I also know that ACU really wanted Bryce Hoppel from Midland (800/1500 guy), but I see that he ended up signing with Kansas. I think it is good that ACU is going after kids who are also being recruited by Big 12 schools - we will win some of those battles and get some good kids who will help.
