As Outsider said, Ghirmai did lose his temper against Duke. However, I really like the way it was handled. Pace immediately took him out for 1 play, calmed him down and then put him back in. When that group came out, R. Moore was having a long discussion with Ghirmai, just the 2 of them. There was no yelling, no screaming, just correction. Agree

Staff had many different spots they started possessions at; own 20, opponents 47, own 2 and opponents 20. Redzone offense looked really good.
WRs Dav. Johnson, K. Clark, Taylor and Golightly had touchdowns. TE Stafford recovered a fumble in the endzone for a touchdown
Then, going from their own the offense got going. On the 1st drive, there was 7-8 straight runs. Then, after a few throws, Iz. Kelley jumped a route and intercepted a pass. The next drive at the 2, Banks had back to back runs, the 1st of about 10 yards and the 2nd over 85.

Last thing for the night, well....maybe
Everyone was wearing the CORRECT jersey number. Cattitude and I were able to readily know who each player was. Instead of going, why is a 5'11, 180 WR playing OL; oh wait, he's not, but that OL is wearing number 7. Just made things so much easier

A couple of initial reactions-
Biggest surprise- Paup wasn’t listed on the two deep.
Second Biggest Surprise- Jolly was apparently held out of the scrimmage due to injury, but the absence of Thursby from the two deep was a bit of a surprise.
Also of note, I thought Tate and Smith might make their presence known on the OL this year.
Not surprising at all- that the Defense won the night. I’ll be disappointed if the D is ahead of the offense when the season gets under way but for now it’s almost to be expected as the offense works on timing between QB and WR and the line learns to,’dance’ with each other.

Surprises-- no mention of Zarak Scruggs No mention of Tyrese White No mention of Brannon Young starts at LB Smith played with 1st team but Dobbins, Banks and Wishart stood out. In every pic on Facebook or Twitter that I've seen #72 (I thought was Sakiri) was at center. Howerton ran 1st team and Sakiri was at tackle--interesting!

Scruggs got a lot of playing time. He ran some with the 1s and 2s. He had at least 1 catch.
Tyrese White looked good. He has lost some weight and seems to have a burst to him again. If I had to guess, I would say Banks had 10 carries, Dobbins 6-7, Smith 4-5, White 3-4 and Wishert had 2.
Paup rotated with 1s and 2s also. It looks like they have a rotation of Duke, Paup and Coheley and stand up OLB/DE. Duke was the best in my opinion by far. One thing they did from time to time is let Paup run the first 2 plays and then bring in Duke on 3rd down. They did the reverse too, which gives them a fresh guy to rush the passer.
Thursby got in at corner and broke up a pass.
Sorry that I didn't mention those things earlier. There were definitely times on defense where they would run the supposed 1st team DL with the 2nd team LBs. And then the 2nd team DL with the 1st team LBs. I also think some of the vets they didn't play nearly as much. Moffett and Hargrove sat much of the night. As did White and Smith on offense. That could be due minor injuries or they know what they are and their place is secure

You provided a wealth of information that is MUCH appreciated by those of us who couldn’t attend. BTW, someone posted a video of wisher’s td run on Twitter. I retweeted it. Very impressive run.

Yes, thank you very much for the info. I realized that probably more folks got time that weren't mentioned in first reports. Question--how did the team look overall to you guys? Could you see a difference over last year? I know we are bigger and taller but did you see a difference in skill level, speed, enthusiasm? We have to be a "work in progress" at this point but when Lamar rolls into town will the product on the field be better? Opinions welcomed.

Lots and lots and lots of thoughts based on Mavaman's outstanding reports from last night. Here are some quick hits:
-I love the QB battle going on! McIvor starts, Peyton Mansell follows and Ethan Long possibly has the best night of all. Love it.
-Wow, we might be 4-5, even 6 people deep at running back - what a luxury. May have the luxury of redshirting 1 or 2 (and with the current rules can even let them play a bit and get experience and still redshirt)
-Colt Cooper is an ATHLETE -- thrilled to see him move to the front at TE (he IS a T&F guy as well and that gives me a bias), but also know that we have some additional players there (the coaches have singled out TE's as an area of strength)
-I love the look of the starting WR's, in fact the top-6 look strong. Pleased to see Cooper Mc getting a chance. Add in Zarak Scruggs and some of the others -- we might well be 9 deep at WR.
-Lots of interesting things at OL, starting with Howerton moving to the front of the line at center. Really cool to see the 2 freshmen - Fogle and Kinney - in the initial 2-deep. Hope to see enough depth that the true freshmen might be able to redshirt.
-I might have missed it, but did Zepeda do any kicking? I read that Burke looked good punting, as he should - I forgot until I looked back at the stats that he averaged 43.5 a punt last year! Did any of the backup kickers get to kick? (Particularly interested to know if Warkentin got his block off of Zepeda or Trimble
-No surprise that see Bradley and Duke starting at DE, but glad to hear that Paup is still getting quality snaps. I have thought that Damion Hart was on the verge of being a beast for 2 years. I was surprised that with the surplus of DE's that Cirby Coheley is playing OLB/DE, but he is terrific athlete and could be outstanding at that position.
-Not surprised to see Morgan and Eades 1-2 at one tackle, but very surprised to see a true freshman walkon and a tall, lean converted DE at the other tackle. Oke must have really shown a lot in camp very quickly to make that kind of impression. Maybe the DT spot is not as thin as we once thought.
-I thought LB might be a pleasant surprise and it appears it is just that. We knew that Hargrove was a cornerstone player, but I love seeing a true freshman and a transfer who flies all over the field among the starters. It looks like ACU's true freshman are going to make an impact this year!
-Not a surprise to me that R Williams, Anderson and Moffett are among the starters, but Marcus Haskins at one of the safeties IS a surprise to me. Solid backups with returnees Washington and Adams, plus new transfer Dorian Plumley and another true freshman trying to get playing time in Brandon Ramsey, plus JaDarius Thursby in the mix. Throw in players like Mike Garrett, Abner Dubar, Dishon Hall, and the injured Patrick Jolly and the depth is fantastic.
I am only going on what Mavmans and others have posted about last night's scrimmage, but ON PAPER, I like what I see. A few surprises filling in some of the gaps. The potential for this team is genuinely excited -- and that is coming from someone who has really been deflated by the ACU football team over the past few years.
Originally, I thought some scheduling conflicts might keep me from attending the Lamar game. But, I think I might get to go after all and I am getting more excited about seeing this team than I ever thought I would be.

As was mentioned earlier, I was sitting with Mavsman. You should have seen us early in the scrimmage scrolling our phones at hyper speed to connect player with number. I love that players wore their roster numbers. One more example of a new, fan friendly atmosphere around the team. So, my take on the night in multiple posts: QB - The three QBs in my opinion are tightly bunched. McIvor has a plus arm for sure. Long was impressive. Mansell didn’t start particularly well with 2nd O against 1st D. As the scrimmage wore on, however, he seemed to get more comfortable. McIvor is leading this competition and as he gets familiar with the new receivers, I think he will pull away. RB - Best production by a position group was definitely by the running backs. The two freshmen made the highlight reel but Smith, White and especially Dobbins looked fantastic.

TE - Yep, this is an A+ group. Caldwell looked good after a couple years riding the pine. I like Castles but Cooper leaves no doubt in my mind who the starter will be.
WR - Talk about your extreme makeover! Golightly with the catch of the night for a TD on a perfectly thrown pass by Mansell. I predict he’ll be all WAC. Size, speed and depth. As a unit, a black mark for drops, however.
OL - I was impressed by Howerton at center. Girty was kinda ragged with his snaps. Let’s talk size. Stared out with Ghirmhai (320) and Fogle (335) on the right side. Howerton (290). Moore (290) and Pullen (295) plus Reese at tackle (290). But there are others who look ready to play. Hatten and Thielen and Yanta at guard. (305, 305, 350). FWIW, Yanta is more than a fat guy. He’s built along the lines of a dump truck. Sakiri (305) looks to be the primary backup at both tackles. Like Trackfan, I wondered why Tate and Smith didn’t play. Or at least enough for me to notice. At least 3 holding calls messed up an otherwise solid night.

DT - This is a young group that played surprisingly well. Morgan and Schultz stood out to me, of course. They are the most experienced. But Eads and Warkentin and Oke made more than a few good plays. Depth seems thin. Let’s hope Morgan doesn’t get hurt.
DE - Duke has already been singled out by Mavsman and I second the motion. He is real trouble coming off the edge. Unlike DT, this group looks deep and talented.
LB - Also a Deep and talented group, methinks. One look is enough to realize how much bigger they are as a group. Darius Moore was the player that jumped off the field.
DB - Another A+ unit IMO. Adams and Moffet at safety caught my eye as did Williams. Plus, for whatever reason we haven’t seen Dunbar and Jolly yet.

Overall impressions:
Offense: C+ - Gotta find the man at QB.
Defense B - Having a defensive minded HC is paying dividends. Already pretty good with lots of potential improvement.
Kicking A - Zepeda could be all WAC. Nickel did a very good job.
