Key mistakes on fourth downs have hurt Lamar all night. ACU needed that margin. No doubt, recovery on the muffed punt allows ACU to get a three possession lead if they can score

Thought the first half McIvor was jumpy in the pocket, as the game went on, it was clear he did not have much of a pocket. OL maybe biggest disappointment.

I was satisfied with the 28-14 win The wildcats were a little sloppy but did come up with some big plays. McIvor has the tools and will get better as the season progresses. Lamar had some bad breaks with penalties on 4th down or the game could have been interesting.

I wasn't blown away with the new look but did see some good things. Running backs looked good as well as QB. And that was with an offensive line that didn't impress me at all. And what happened to Zepeda? He looked off from his very first kickoff and none of his field goal attempts were even close. Still, I'll always take a win.

McIvor is for real, both OL and DL need work, we were a bit lucky but Lamar should not have even scored. I was impressed by our receivers.

Reported attendance was 5413. Those who were there, do you think that’s accurate? It actually looked like more than that on the tele.

Give the students credit as their section looked better than I expected, but the west side was sparse especially on the endzone wings. Overall a much better gameday environment with the tailgating lot inside. Keep winning and the seats will keep filling.

First of all, congrats on the win for our Wildcats. Goal #1 accomplished: win first game and be undefeated at home. A win is a win, and although I saw some good things, there is still a lot of work to be done. I give props to Lamar. They came in ready to play and actually played better than last year, as well as changed up some of their play calling. Our defense got beat early, but after that settled in did quite well. I still didn’t see us attack the ball like I did in the spring game and the scrimmage though. We did get decent pass rush. Chandler is just a hard QB to tackle. Honestly, if it wasn’t for the defense, I think we probably would have lost this game. I saw sparks in the over-all offense, but that is where the most work needs done right now. We scored 28 points, so I shouldn’t complain too much, but we won’t do so with tougher competition. Our running backs did a good job as a unit. McIvor showed his lack of game experience at the college level. He had a few really good passes but struggled when under pressure, which he was under a lot. I saw our OL miss a lot of blocks and get pushed around, besides continuing with bad penalties. To not be able to get a TD on the 2 yard line with several attempts can’t happen, even if we did try the same thing pretty much each time. Our OL has the size to do better and we should. Hopefully they take this game film and can make the needed corrections. The OL simply got worse as the game progressed. Kolby proved to be the workhorse he is. He was the one guy that consistently got open and could make the catches. He should have had the one missed bomb, but I think the defender got just enough of his arm to knock the ball out. For the most part, our other receivers were ineffective in getting open on several routes except the comeback. I’ll give props to Catalon as well. Special teams did what it needed to do. We successfully recovered their muffed punt reception and we managed to make all of ours. Lamar’s hang time on their punts were spot on and our guy was surrounded each time. But, we caught the ball and protected possession. We will see what happens between week 1 and week 2. As far as the crowd goes? I think the 5400+ count was accurate. I was disappointed in the crowd actually on our side, but it was a Thursday evening. Hopefully Saturday games will be better. The pregame festivities and audio/visuals were much better this year. In general the audio/visuals were much improved. The idea to have the tailgating at the back of the South end zone was a good idea. It got the students inside the stadium and made for a more active game day experience. The students filled 4 sections during the first half of the game and were really participative and loud. But, as usual, after halftime, ¾ of them left. Game one is in the books and time to move forward…

I agree the student attendance was good. We’ll see if Schubert ends up with purple hair for the week. I do wonder if the decreased west side attendance was due to the game being on a work night, precluding out of town alumni from coming from DFW. We still have a long way to go before we are Abilene’s team.

I do wonder if the decreased west side attendance was due to the game being on a work night, precluding out of town alumni from coming from DFW. We still have a long way to go before we are Abilene’s team. That is a big reason. I also heard comments about conflicts with school events, etc. Winning cures a multitude of ills. There wasn't much energy on the west side of the stadium. Sort of, we've been here before and we're waiting for the other shoe to drop. I hope Prairie View's band comes with them..

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
QB: Good. Showed a lot of poise, no interceptions. Bad. Not much. Wasn't sharp but that will come. Ugly. Sailed a throw across the middle of the end zone with Golightly open.
RB: Good. Rovaughn. No bad, no ugly.
TE/WR: Good. Catalon, Clark, Golightly. No drops. Bad. Couldn't get the TEs involved in the passing game.
OL: Good. Consistently opened holes for the RBs. Great downfield hustle by Ghirmai on the reverse. No holding penalties. Bad. Too many false starts. Ugly. Couldn't dominate from the 2 yd line. Totally befuddled by Lamar's blitz packages.** Ghirmai's penalty for unsportsmanlike inside the 10.
DB: Good. Excellent coverage all night. Tackling was sure. Bad. Not much. Ugly. Two bombs in the first quarter.
LB: Good. Everything. Run defense. This bunch can play.
DL: Good. Also everything. Pretty much a 4-man rush kept Lamar QB busy all night.
Special Teams: Good. Logan Burke. Dustin Inness recovered fumble. Bad: Zepeda (But he'll be back)
** I'm not sure that the OL was as bad as it seemed. Lamar rushed 5 or 6 on every play. I bet this was a wrinkle the coaches haven't seen.

If the OL gives McIvor time, he has an accurate and rocket arm. He threw some beauties. Two open misses but that is not uncommon at any level. Clearly the potential is there for an outstanding passing game, but protection must improve. Lamar was clearly better than last year, and their rush was relentless. Also, the Lamar QB was pretty agile, amazing speed. If he had our receivers, he would really be dangerous. My biggest disappointment was down at the north end when we have the ball at their goal line and cannot move 2 or 3 yards to score, and then try a fourth down pass. Lamar just out hustled us on that series, and our play selection was pitiful. My second disappointment was Zepeda, who had an off-night. Surely that will change. A question I have is whether those two long touchdown receptions by Lamar were luck or did our D show a weakness? I thought the score should have been 41 to 0. We passed up a touchdown and at least two field goals.

AD Lassiter sent out an email with a survey about the game. I will be sure to fill it out. I really hope we can find some ways to get people to come as the game experience ACU is presenting is worth it.
