Certainly didn't feel like our best effort for such an important game but SFA has athletes and experience. Give us another year and we'll have that.

That’s what happens when you have a lacrosse player calling your defense.

That’s what happens when you have a lacrosse player calling your defense. Coming into today, we had the #41 ranked defense in FCS which puts us in exactly the top 3rd of the FCS. Defense wasn’t really that bad. Now, having a FG kicker that is kicking at a 38% clip (The worst in all of D1, and 5th worst across ALL THE NCAA) is an issue.

It was an electric time as the game started. Inexplicably, we found out we could not gain one yard running the ball down on their goal line, after a pass put us into great position with an incredible one handed reception... Somehow we hung tough and when we did not shoot ourselves in the foot, we scored three TDs. But in the end it felt like this year's version of the Angelo State game. I don't know how SFA lost so many games this year. They were clearly better prepared than we were. 7-4 is an improvement and that is gratifying. We just picked the wrong game for a let-down or we would be the conference champs. Their quarterback, Self, put on a show, 397 yards passing. Last game we out gained them both passing and rushing but had the weird field goal attempt that led to SFA getting a game winning field goal. It happened again today, a fine kick that put us in the hole.

The decision to have Blair try the FG was very poor to say the least, but we lost this game because we didn't cover receivers consistently and we couldn't tackle trey when it really counted. Trey should have never had that chance but we gave Xavier 10 yards on a 4th down, then we just continued failing after that key play. We couldn't run block all day and we tried hail mary passes at the end of the game instead of moving the chains. This game was a mixture of blown plays and bad decisions. Again, really good season but really pathetic game. SFA has players, we knew that but we blew this games with huge chunks...

True, but this game was ultimately lost at the end because the defense choked. We played poorly all game, but the game was still winnable. Trying to have our offense step up with hail mary's was a lost cause by that point.

Defense did not choke. Football is a game of inches. We didn’t sustain drives, we didn’t run the ball. We did had the ball 25 minutes to their 35 minutes. It’s a team game. Special teams and offense have a say in that outcome just as much as the defense. We maybe could say we choked against SFA the first time around, we just got beat this time around.

I really would have liked to see Kobe Clark play more ball games. He had an outstanding year. A curious thing to me is Jermiah Dobbins having great games midseason (including one vs SFA) and then hardly touching the ball the last 3 games. 7-4 is such a great accomplishment (3 losses by 3 points) but just feels hollow right now. I think Patterson did an incredible job to raise the quality of this program that was so bad for so long. It will be interesting to see who stays (including coaches) and who goes. We need to recruit some speed. The QB room is good. The RB room is good. The TE room is good. We need a dominant OL or 2. We need a couple of burners at wide receiver to go with our tall possession guys. A couple of 340 DT's to go with Morgan would be nice. LB's to go with Young and a lock down corner or two. That's my list Santa. I'll wait.

Patterson preaches complementary football, and we got just that for good portions of this game. We shouldn't pin this loss on simply one phase of the game (the offense, the defense, or the special teams). All three groups had their high and low points today.
Tough loss because we had so many breaks and opportunities. The future is bright.

Tough loss because we had so many breaks and opportunities. The future is bright. We had highs and lows in all three phases of the game. We didn't play strong in any of them. Despite that, we were ahead until the final couple of minutes of the game and had them to 4th down to take over and finish out the game. It was the failure of the defense on that 4th down and the subsequent downs immediately after that which pushed the lows of the defense above the lows of the offense and special teams. For the most part, special teams did pretty well actually. The defense choked in a key moment of the game when the game was on the line. That is sound because up to that point we were still winning despite not playing well over-all. You guys don't like the way I frame things many times but there is nothing "unsound" in that analysis.
