Why can we not serve the ball in the court? This has plagued this team for years. 14 service errors agains TAMU-Commerece and more today...this goes beyond coaching. Terrible on the unforced errors. And where is the good PA announcer...who is this guys and why is he announcing the game?

Wow! We come back from 2 sets down to WIN the match 3-2. Way to go ladies. With Guffey, Steinhilber and Knier on the shelf we get to play lots of new players. This bodes well for the future.

Didn't really raise a sweat in beating North Dakota 3-0 in the late match. Getting a bunch out of a young team.

After losing the first two sets to Providence, the Women won nine straight sets to go undefeated in the tournament. Next stop, Lubbock. Tech @ Moody.

Not a thing of beauty, but a win is a win. Grambling played a very slow, deliberate style of play and it was a challenge to adjust to the style of play, which is a good thing to see different styles of play during pre-conference. Really good to see Madeline Guffey get some playing time. I saw Bryley on the sidelines - not dressed out, but very active in leading the team in cheers - being a leader even though she must have some kind of injury.
Good point, Cap'n about winning 9 straight sets after that slow start against Providence. One small correction -- Tech is coming to Abilene this Tuesday. Hope to see a good turnout for the game. My favorite VB announcer will be part of the broadcast teach. Speaking of the broadcast, the camera appeared to be on the blink in set 1 -- I think they may have changed out cameras after the first set and the picture was much improved. The camera-person did not appear to be used to working a VB game -- missed all the balls hit onto the back line. But, ACU TV is learning experience -- these are not pro camera people and I truly believe our students get more practical experience in broadcast than virtually any other school in the country.

“My favorite VB announcer will be part of the broadcast tea(m).”
Would that be Londyn?

For those of you more in the know…is this team better because of the foundation laid and recruits brought in by the old coach, or does this new staff make that much of a difference?

Wildcatter, that is a great question and like many sports questions, it is probably more of a 50/50 answer. The previous staff had a fantastic recruiting year -- the 7 freshmen were largely recruited before Coach Blair left. And, from what I have heard from team members, former assistant coach Jeff Fiorenza did most of the heavy lifting in recruiting that class. Coach Fiorenza left a few months before Alisa took the Tech job and is now the 3rd assistant for the new staff at TAMU. I give kudos to Zach Lassiter, who the moment that Coach Blair resigned starting calling both the current players and the recruits to assure them ACU would get a good coach. ACU did not lose a single recruit in the coaching change. The moment that IJ got the job, she started communicating with the players and kept up the "re-recruiting" process.
I DO also believe that the new staff is making a big difference as well. Every healthy member of the team has played this season, some of that by design and some by necessity due to what appears to be injuries to several key people. In the Tech tourney, Madeline Gulley looked hugely improved over last season at setter -- not surprising when you have former setter IJ Moronu-Alstrup in the HC spot and former All-American setter Ainise Havili in the top assistant role. The freshman, Rachel Koss, did a very credible job in the TAMU-C game and now, in the ACU tourney games this past weekend. I also am impressed with the job that Sara Carrizales had done at libero -- again helped no doubt by the fact that both ACU coaches have lots of experience on the defensive side of the game.
It is terrific to see ACU playing well without Madeline Guffey and Bryley Steinhilber. Ashley Edmiston has stepped up her game, as has Emily Mekelburg and the freshmen hitters like Larson and Strong . The setters have done a good job of feeding the experienced middle blockers -- both Bre Box and Braden Bossier are seniors -- and I have seen more scoring from the middle than in the past. I see that as a positive coaching choice to use the personnel well who are available. I have also been very impressed with the blocking ability of the Bre Box/Emily Mekelburg duo.
I do think that the team will be much better when they get Guffey and Steinhilber back full-time, but the experience that some of the youngsters got this past week has been invaluable and I think it will pay off handsomely later this season. And, I do believe at big part of that is due to the new coaching staff.

I agree with most everything TrackFan, but the issue with Steinhilber and many of the outside hitters is their ability to hit the ball in the court. Bryley, Londyn, and the other outsides had a big problem hitting the ball long way too often last year. Their hitting percentages were terrible. Also, Box and Bossier were severely underutilized last year. Both could dominate a game, but the setter would rarely set them, or when she did, it was a bad set. Good to see them being used more this year. Hopefully Guffey can get health and be more consistant...Koss has filled in well. I like the new coaching staff. I think Blair and team would have been better this year, but I also think the chance to go to Tech and coach with one of her mentors was too good a deal to pass up. Don't blame her, plus a good chance to get IJ back here.
