The fall exhibition season started this weekend and I got to see them play an intrasquad and a game against Weatherford College. They played Howard College today but I was unable to go. If any of you happened to go to the game, post your impressions.
The thing that stood out immediately to me is our pitching. Transfer Lina Russo, returner Talia Nielsen, freshman Ella Beeman were dominant. Against Weatherford, Nielsen and Beeman each had 5 strikeouts in 3 innings. I saw Russo in the intrasquad and she has great stuff.
Weatherford had a very strong pitcher to start and we were only able to manage a solo hr by Olivia Taylor and a couple of singles. However, we did get the bats on the ball. I think only one player struck out looking. Hats off to Weatherford who stole at least 3 hits with great defense. We got several more hits against their backup pitchers. ACU won but that’s less important than the progress.

I ended up going to six of the fall games. Abigail did not use a regular lineup rather mixed in the whole roster so that every player got somewhat equal innings. The two transfers at second and short played by far the most innings but they needed to work together.
But I got a really good look at the 2024 team.
So over the next week or two I plan to bring you an in-depth look at Wildcat Softball and how I think they will fare in the WAC this spring. Spoiler Alert: a lot better than last year.
Something to look forward to is that ACU is hosting a tournament Feb 16, 17, and 18 at Poly Wells field. Participants include Houston Christian, Marist, and University of New Mexico. I plan to wear warm clothes and get the season started off right.

We lose game #1 of the 2024 season 10-1. Another game to follow today. Fr. Ella Beeson started and gave up 4 runs in 4 innings. Liz Shaeffer pitched 1 inning and gave up 2 runs. Riley White pitched the 6th inning and gave up 4 runs. Hopefully Lina Russo will give us a good effort when she pitches. Pitcher was the position we needed the most help.

Coach Farley didn’t start her best line up. I think she may want everyone to get some innings during the tournament. Hopefully they will play better in subsequent games.

Run ruled in game 3, 9-1. If we've got a better lineup it should be time to roll it out. Looks like "same old, same old" to me.

Played well in game 4 as Pitcher Talia Neilson was very effective. But we’ve got to score some runs. In the 7th inning the Cats had runners on first and second with the go-ahead run at the plate. The batter was Avery Miloch who led the team in home runs last year.
So what happens? Miranda Lista gets thrown out trying to steal 3rd. What? Not a very good decision for sure.
It sounds weird to say this but the starting pitchers by and large did pretty well. But the team needs to learn to score.
(A lot like my golf game. Pretty solid tee to green but need to learn to score.)

Terrible performance. Couldn’t pitch or hit. I still think they are better but I’m beginning to doubt it. We‘ll see how they do this weekend at their own tournament.

Bounce back double header wins. 7-1, 7-3 both good pitching games. I take it the Olivia Marble was Olivia Taylor last year. I like what Kaydee Bennett is bringing to the table. May her tribe increase!

Yes, Olivia got married over the summer. Nice young man. He is working construction this year until she graduates then she Wii go to work and he will finish his schooling. Fortunate to have her in my Stats class along with Russo and Bennett.

Yep. Lost 3-4 to Marist. Beeman gave up 2 hits and no runs in 5 innings. Then Riley White came in to pitch and gave up 4 runs. I know coach Farley wants White to return to the form of 2 years ago but she has been ineffective so far this season.
Kaydee Bennett is smokin’. Batting .500. 12-24 in 8 games. 3 triples and a home run.

Really proud of the ladies in their 2 victories Sunday, especially coming from behind in the 2nd game to win in 7 inn. Hoping the pitching can keep getting better and our clutch hitting keeps us close. Way to go ladies!
