Yep, probably not a great thing to say.... Ok, I apologize if I offended some with non-woke no nonsense personal thoughts. How about this...you don’t let a student athlete with 1 year (possibly) of free education left to tell an athletic department and entire alumni base who will or will not be hired to be the head basketball coach for the foreseeable future. Is that better?

Glad to see that UTEP is pointing out the academic success of ACU's teams also.

I support Tanner being offered the head job but have mixed feelings about players saying they will not practice unless the job is offered to him. Appreciate the support for him but at most jobs the current employees don't have final say on who the new boss will be. I respect their decision to want Tanner and their comradeship. He’s a great coach and has done a lot for the program. However, have to let the athletic director’s and leadership do their job of finding the best option. Tough for them to do it publicly too. I’m sure the success and niche of the program has brought some attention to some talented coaches without pressure of the players.

I personally don't think you will find a better coach, with better pedigree (worked with Joe for many years in additions to Danny Kaspar at SFA), with the built in relationship to the players, school, state, and tradition than Tanner. We don't have the capital currently to go get a big name. I think it is the best guy for the job who has waited his turn for a shot and we should be the team to give it to him.

I would not be disappointed with coach T being our hire one bit. What I do disagree with is letting the current players hold the AD hostage.

The players are not holding anyone or anything hostage, they’re simply making their voices heard. This is what players having actual power looks like. I think it’s a great thing.

And we can stop with McCasland coming here. That won't happen Completely agree. My options in in order of preference: 1. Coach Tanner (by far my favorite) 2. Coach Ted Crass (Former Golding Assistant.) 3. Coach Jerome Tang (Baylor Assistant. He's liked Baylor because he can be so open about his faith. It would make ACU a easy fit IMO) I think that Coach Tanner is 10000% the guy for the job and it should be his if he wants it. Some other names to consider: Billy Kennedy-former A&M coach who’s currently a Wichita State staffer, he left Murray State for A&M after working foot Allen Ward; Todd Duncan-current LCU coach Tom Brown-current West Texas A&M coach Ben McCollum- current Northwest Missouri State coach who’s arguably been more successful there than Adam Dorrel I personally favor Brett, but, fear that’s emotional. Meanwhile, we’re fortunate to have such an experienced AD to lead us through this matter. Likewise, ten years ago we hired a new coach only to have to replace him before he ever coached game, and look how good that turned out for us. This time, we’ll have choices-good choices!-thanks to Joe Golding, Brett Tanner, Antonio Bostic, Jon Trilli, Bryen Spriggs, Ted Crass, Patrice Days, Brian Burton, Jaylen Franklin, Jaron Lewis, Peyton Ricks, and a whole lot of others, have made ACU basketball matter!! We’ll be all right. Just Trust. The. Process.

I will miss Joe Golding immensely. He is a terrific guy and one of the most entertaining post-game interviews in the country. I hate losing him at ACU -- much as I hated losing Wes Kittley to Texas Tech 22 years ago. I wish Joe all the best at UTEP.
I am firmly in the camp of hiring Brette Tanner ASAP as the HC at ACU. Brette loves coaching at ACU. He is the principal engineer of the defense that has lifting ACU basketball out of the doldrums. He is immensely respected by the ACU players. He is also an outstanding recruiter. Sign him to a contract now before some P-5 type schools offers him a lot more money as an assistant than ACU can offer him as the HC.

I’m of the opinion that we have two options- Hire Tanner for the reasons you identify or go big with someone like Jerome Tang from Baylor in the hope that he can take us to the next level. None of the other names mentioned here seem on par with Tanner.

Coach Tanner would be a solid hire. The players trust him, and in some sense, that really matters. If you look at what is happening at Tech, everyone thought the same thing. Let's keep Adams, who was the longtime assistant. All but 4 players have left the team. AD Ward should talk to the players, hear them out, and of course, make the best decision for the program. If that is Tanner, awesome! If it is Tang, awesome! I do think we need to find out if Tang is interested. If he is, we have to let that play out.
I don't think it would be wise to hire a D2 coach. We have seen how that has played out with football. There is a big enough jump from lead assistant to head coach. It is bigger, whether you have been a head coach or not, to go from D1 to D2. We must remember, we are moving to a better conference. I know Coach Duncan from Lubbock Christian. Great guy and a winner! I coached against him for several years and his teams were always prepared. That said, I would be very disappointed if we went after him or the coach from WT.
