Seems like every year it's not about who we get to play for ACU it's those that leave that are making the program. Who will be next?
Edit... Thought Parmelly was a senior, not a grad student. Makes more sense to me now. Good luck to him where ever he lands. Question still stands...who is next. (Undergrad)? The glass is half full.... the glass is half full....

When I first read the tweets I was pretty bummed. But they have both earned their degrees and have given 4 years to ACU football. They’ve earned the right to look at other opportunities. I’ll be more concerned about the state of the program if we lose some of the promising new guys.

Isn’t Parmally graduating? Seems like I thought he was graduating early. He may be in the same boat as Gibbons, moving on to a graduate program and playing football.

In fact, Kade Parmelly graduated this past summer with his undergrad (in 3 years) and he has expressed an interest in going to seminary -- so maybe he would be looking at somewhere with a divinity school - Baylor, TCU, SMU, etc. Bucfan, you are correct -- more crucial fo the 2021 team will be monitoring which underclassmen chose to transfer out.

One of the things that happened early on in Dorrel's tenure was the buy-in from existing players and recruits that had been identified by the previous staff. Players like Tracy James (soph), Josh Fink (soph), Luke Anthony (freshman), and Kade Parmelly (freshman). The same could be said for our young defensive holdovers: Kameron Hill (freshman), Cole Burgess (soph), Jeremiah Chambers (soph), Bolu Onifade (soph), and Sam Denmark (senior). Those of us who have followed the transition to D1 would note how many holes existed in that roster, but there were reasons to be optimistic. The offensive line improved quite a bit early on, and our ability to fight in the trenches against top Southland schools was becoming noticeable.
Fast forward to 2020 and all of these players will be gone, and we are looking at what our current coaches have been able to assemble. I think the top priority has to be getting better at what we do best and that's battling at the line of scrimmage.
Next, I think we need to continue to adapt to the changing transfer market. Our peers like SFA and Sam have a longer history of convincing players from UTEP and UMASS to transfer and fill holes upfront. SELA finds immense JC talent in Mississipi. Nicholls State and McNeese bring back players with New Orleans/LA roots. I think we'll need to find what our identity in the transfer market really is.
Right now, we're a producer of talent rather than an importer. It used to be the case that schools like ACU had to develop players via coaching and strength conditioning. But today's transfer market means you have to be able to develop players who can move up to the FBS level and constantly import new waves of talent. The FCS is now a transfer league (not unlike JC and D2), and we have to adjust to this new normal.
Outside of winning at the line of scrimmage, I would rank our needs this way:
1. Offensive line. If the players we have are the future, two or three of them will need to step up to the next level. 2. LB (much more speed and athleticism). 3. Greater size on the D-line. We have some good players here, but even in this shortened season we had injury/depth problems 4. Depth at RB (perhaps more size) 5. More competition at the safety positions 6. Keeping up with the Southland and finding a player with elite talent to kick off 7. DE's but this is like the need at LB

I stopped posting a couple of years ago. I’ve been lurking ever since. I decided to post again to say what needs to be said. Adam Dorrel is a great guy and all but he’s not getting the job done. We aren’t getting any better. In some ways we are getting worse. It’s time to put up or shut up. Paint or get off the ladder. Shape up or ship out.
It all starts with recruiting. That’s got to improve. Stop whining about the special challenges of recruiting to ACU. That just enables sub par results. There are plenty of recruits who do just fine in the classroom and are Christians. Ok, Abilene is boring, I’ll give you that. And required chapel is a drag. But c’mon. Required chapel is nothing if you get a free college education. Besides it’s an opportunity to meet some fine looking ladies.
Ok,back to recruiting. If guys on here could see that the Cats were short of running backs why couldn’t whoever does recruiting see it? If we could see that we were coming up short on the defensive line and elsewhere why couldn’t the recruiting coordinator see it? Don’t even get me started on special teams.
A major staff shake up is overdue. Get a offensive coordinator who knows the spread offense Texas high schools run. Hope that does the trick but don’t let it stop Alan from looking over the market for head coaching prospects.
I’m through venting now. I feel better.

A possible offensive system or scheme overhaul might help the ACU cause. I’m not sure it would make a big impact unless playing calling changes. Presently Coach Lamberson shows as the OC, however Coach Dorrel calls the plays during the game. It appears to be a similar situation to having Jerry Jones the owner of the Cowboys fire Jerry Jones the GM Cowboys. It’s not going to happen!!! I stopped posting a couple of years ago. Riley Mayfield started for UNT for two years and wound up getting a cup of coffee in the NFL ask unsigned free agent.

Hohenstein has been a terrific grad transfer for us. Some other grad transfers to ACU include Nico Russolillo, Truett Knox, Bryan Bullock. Those are some that come to mind.
