Any big public university will have a wide range of grad programs.

If I were those guys and got my 4-year degree at ACU and had a chance to fund the first year of my grad degree by playing football, I think I might do it. Knowing Gibbens and Parmelly, this move is likely more about academics than football. Gibbens has a great chance of getting into an NFL camp as a FA but unlikely as a draftee. I can’t say about Parmelly or Hohenstein. While ACU’s undergrad programs are as good as anywhere in the country, our grad offerings are fairly limited. So I totally understand and support leaving as a grad transfer. When put this way, it is more understandable. If they are getting graduate degrees, that is valuable but I am not seeing the creme' de la creme' graduate schools. Still, you make it make a lot more sense. No reason to delay your future if you can get a free year of graduate school. Of course I have no idea what various athletes are studying so it is hard for me to make some of the generalized statements I have made. Glad you point this out because it eases my worry a bit. Agreed, with one notable exception. Parmelly just Tweeted that he has an offer from Rice. Otherwise our guys are getting offers from schools like UTSA, UNT, USF, Arkansas State, and UNC Charlotte. None of these are exactly top tier grad programs. UTSA does have some excellent health science related grad programs though! So this might be a possible exception, Money is likely a major consideration, now more than ever. Tuition and fees these days cost as much as a house and new car back when we were in school. If the choice comes down to going to, say, North Carolina at Chapel Hill and paying full sticker price or going to UNC Charlotte for free, I can see why a guy would choose the latter especially for a master’s degree.

Didn’t Parmelly say he wanted to go to seminary?
It might be grad school or it might just be guys want to find a new challenge with an extra year of eligibility they didn’t plan to have. That doesn’t mean they weren’t loyal or dedicated to ACU.

That doesn’t mean they weren’t loyal or dedicated to ACU. Parmelly already has an undergrad degree and was enrolled in a master’s program in education this year. Maybe he’s looking at a doctoral program elsewhere? They also offer degrees in religion. Or maybe he just wants to prove he can play at the FBS level.

It all makes sense now as long as they go somewhere where there is real value in the degree they want to pursue. I just noticed some lower level colleges and wondered why would someone want to transfer there. However, I can also see some other reasons why any advanced degree is valuable. If a prospective coach had a Ph.D. or master's degree and their early career started in public schools, they likely would get higher compensation -- at least I think. There are also government related jobs where the origin of a degree is not quite as important as the level of a person's degree. Parmelly going to Rice is good news.

I don’t know whether Parmelly is going to Rice. He just reported that he has an offer from Rice. In many applied areas such as accountancy there is often real value in less prestigious schools. For example, my oldest daughter opted to attend a small liberal arts college in Atlanta over the larger and more highly ranked accounting program at the University of Georgia. It was a good decision because Oglethorpe had a cadre of alums who worked for several of the Big 5 (at the time) accounting firms who advocated for the top grads from their alma mater. “ Networking” matters.

Quite true. In industry there is a growing tendency to place increasing value in broader education. Of course you need depth in your major field but some larger universities have gotten a little too siloed so that too much is very narrowly focused in a department's narrow area of interest. I hear that from industry and I also know it from having employed many, many technical people such as engineers, scientists, computer experts and even medical experts. Of course you need the skills, but innovation is not always achieved with narrow blinders on. One of ACU's strengths is that departments and colleges are not too isolated from each other. And I don't want us to lose that advantage. Too much isolation diminishes one's educational value in this modern world of innovation. This does not mean I don't support depth and expertise in one's major area, just that experience outside your silo is invaluable.

Talked with 2 fb players today, both freshman (one is Jermiah). Some encouraging news. Jermiah told me that he is committed to ACU and is not planning on going anywhere. Hallelujah!
I asked the other player about the recent grad transfers and point-blank asked if team culture played into those decisions at all. He said, "No way!" and went on to talk about how much he thought the team was unified and that the culture here was positive.
No doubt things the improve on, fix, etc. but those two conversations made me think a lot more positively about the team overall going forward.

Mavsman, that is the kind of big program I don’t mind losing a player to.
