Just one response to Bogey's concern that we are recruiting D2 talent... It's possible, but remember that Coach Brown was a D1 coach for quite a long time with a good FCS program. We are definitely struggling to recruit DTs, it seems. This group is pretty young. Maybe it's breakout time.

We keep trying for JUCO guys. Some stick some don’t. Lozano already being gone is a shame.

Anyone know what happened to Lozano? He was from Hamlin so wanting to be closer to home sure isn't the reason for him leaving.

Sam Houston, on the other hand, is quite a bit bigger with Moscaro (300) and Mustin (325). Plus they have 2 340+ starting OL. They are loaded with seniors and I suspect that they will all be back next fall unless they take off to prepare for the draft and avoid injury. Moscaro will be a 6th year if he returns this fall... They're loaded with Seniors and brought in a very good Fr. DL group. I watched this one kid they got, Kam Washington, and he has no business being an FCS guy even if he isn't huge. They're a great team that's only going to get better, especially with their QB still having 2 seasons after the spring wraps up. We're bringing in a lot of transfers and that's great. But it may behoove us to maybe try and see what they're doing on the OL/DL that we're not. It could just be the difference in academic standards but I don't think it's that simple.

Sam Houston also plays a 3-4 defense, whereas we play a 4-3. In a 3-4, you want bigger bodies so your linebackers and safeties flow to the ball Their defense is 3-4 on paper, but they end up with 4 across on many downs. Often Wallace and Mascorro are next to one another, somewhat like 2 DTs. Lots of interchangeable parts on that front 7. But they do have that size and power inside. They create chaos from the inside out.

I like the new transfer from Presbyterian College, C J Tillman. Listed at 6' 278 lbs but looks to have strength and a good motor (and a very good GPA). I think he'll have 4 yrs. of eligibility

Some notes based on the most recent defensive depth chart that Mavsman posted: -there are some returning walkon types who were on the spring roster -- Zeke Lott and Joseph Mosbey at LB and converted QB Keegan Tharp at safety. Seems like I saw quite a bit of Lott in the spring scrimmage. -In the last few weeks, there have been a 2 more adds on the defensive side of the ball: DT CJ Tillman, from Presbyterian, and CB Dishon Hall, from Iowa Central. In the past, the S&C coaches have often posted info that might indicate who is working in Abilene during the summer. I am hoping to see some of the crumbs of info this summer as well. Also, today (Thursday, June 17), the new SID hits Abilene. Hope he hits the ground running!!

Just looking at each defensive position, as it stands right now--it appears to me that LB might be our weakest link. We are solid with starters (Nwankwo, Brannon, Kier) with some experience behind them (Green, Hargrove, James) but my overall impression is that we are just adequate at this position. We are short, light, and not real fast. Maybe I'll be surprised at what we put on the field. I'm hoping that Abe Schwinn becomes a contributor and we've had some good fortune in the past at having a freshman (sorry, 1st year player) come to the top (Pointer, Coheley, Taite). DE might be our next weakest position but we do have 2 fairly good starters in Paup and Freeney (maybe Obadeyi). We really need a couple of 2nd year guys (Hart, Herrold, Byrom) to step up and maybe Bradley will be a quick study and be a contributor. At DT we really need to know if Lozano is no longer on the team. His name not being on the spring roster is troublesome but maybe he was injured and/or needing to concentrate on grades. With him we have a steady group of 4 including the new recruit Tillman (Titre, Morgan, Lozano and maybe Schultz). If Thielen were to be moved back we'd still have a good group without Lozano. CB and Safety seem to be our defensive strength with 4 returning CB's (Stapp, Richardson, Anderson, Satterfield) with lots of experience and 3 transfer additions (Branch, Garrett, Hall) and safety with 2 returning starters (Washington, Bullock) a transfer (Adams) and 2 good looking 1st year players (Dillingham and Marshall). I wish we had a real "playmaker" at DE and another top-flight LB. Adequate overall but not spectacular. Injuries could really do us in on this side of the ball. Looking to see if some of our new guys push us up on the performance level.

Some really good insight on the offense chat, I really hope it's going to be a special year for ACU! Any word on how defense is looking? Offense sells tickets but defense wins championships!

It's been reported that he is here, just not on the roster as of yet. This could be a transcript situation, maybe he is finishing up a class, etc. If we get to the middle of next week and he's not on there, or the other 4 transfers aren't on there either, then it becomes a cause for concern
