For all those that were clamoring for Art Briles just look how quickly an OC job at Grambling got pulled.

Third time Briles has been offered or a hired for a job and then has had to step down. If ACU had hired him, it would have been a firestorm from all sides.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Wish I were in Abilene.

Also of note in the article above is that players and coaches will be available to the media one day a week.

Has anyone heard any player talk about the pros and cons of the coaching change now that practice has started? I'm glad you asked this, I was just going to post something. Let me first say I was a huge proponent of Dorrel and the former staff, as many remembered I ruffled a lot feathers on here defending them to the bitter end. I've had the opportunity to talk with two players and they love these guys. One told me they coach us up hard, but love us up too. Said it's completely different from the weight program to the meetings to the practices, completely different in a good way. Nothing against the other coaches but one told me he feels closer to these coaches already than the other staff, and he had a great relationship with them. Says a ton about Patterson's character and how he leads and the character of the men he brought in. I'm sold out to these guys now! I'm pumped.

Oldtime, that is exactly what I have heard from a player on the team. He indicated that he had been terribly disappointed in the former coaching staff (he only played for the former staff for one year) and that he already believes in this current staff. He also indicated that the communication between the coaches and players is 100% better with this new staff -- expectations are very clear.
I too wanted the former staff to succeed, because when they succeed, my alma mater succeeds. I wish I knew when everything went off the rails. I am thrilled to see that there are indications that the team is back on track. I guess we will see if things appear to be better from the fans standpoint in the next few weeks.

Dorrell was very likely a good man and coach but he came from a different world, one in which he was a supreme leader. He knew his area and the surrounding coaches and it was a DII level program, We asked him to come to Texas where the football world is King and schools and coaches have relationships he could not have known. My problem was it appeared he remained aloof from stepping back and doing the dirty work of working into the Texas coaching circles. He needed to adapt to the situation and not try to be so isolated.
Patterson is a member of the Texas football circle. He knows people and people know him. He can recruit in Texas and he has brought assistants into the program that appear to fit into this "club" even if they have not been deep inside the circle I am talking about. Patterson and his staff seem to know the environment and they are not being aloof at all. I would expect our players to be much more comfortable with him. Now let's hope all this translates to a new era of Wildcat football. All I really know is it seems like Patterson understands the situation and people recognize that in him.
