After Tarleton went ahead 54-52, the women went on a 26-6 run. That was something to see.
But they played really sloppy in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

Madi Miller has a very nice pull up 12-15 foot jump shot but continually dribbles into trouble under the basket and loses the ball. Aspen Thornton will dribble to the basket but if it is closed off, she either pulls up for a short jump shot or passes it out. Maleeaah Langstaff, even though she makes some shots on drives to the basket also drives into trouble and loses control of the ball far too often. The same holds true for Bella and Zoe. Addie Martin is our only player that can consistently get the ball in the basket in traffic in the paint. We must learn when to pull off a drive and either feed Addie or pass out for a 3 point shot or to reset. We are just not very good dribblers especially when pressured. My 2 cents worth. When 3's are falling like they were in the 4th quarter, we're a pretty solid team. Madi Miller is having a phenomenal year scoring. Her 3 point shooting has improved dramatically. I hope Gracy Wernli or Payton Hull can be our sharpshooters next year, helping Aspen and Claire. Addie will get much needed help from Meredith Mayes (if she's ready to play) and Emma Troxell in the paint.

ACU losing to UTA was disappointing. We should have won in my opinion. We make careless mistakes and turnovers, miss too many easy shots, and just had a bad game. Where has our defense gone?

This year’s team is frustrating. Even to the coaches. I hope it’s just youth and an off year. Next year hold a lot of promise.

The ladies are looking good vs the top squad in the WAC. Up 14 going into the 4th quarter. Maleah Langstaff put the Cats on her back and carried them thru a great 3rd quarter.

As good as our 3rd quarter was our 4th quarter was just as bad or worse. The we smother them in OT. Langstaff has 34 points and Bella Earle has 13 rebounds. Thornton comes up big in OT.

What a game by Langstaff!!! SFA should send our ladies a present. I think this catapults SFA to the top seed of the end of season tournament.

SFA was already way ahead according to the seeding formula but I agree, this seals the deal. SFA will be the 1 seed even though SUU has the better record and beat them head to head. Good grief, SUU is huge. Two ladies at 6'5 and one at 6'3 plus a couple of 6'2. Not very quick, however. We took advantage with our speed tonight. Don't think the RedHawks brought their A game. But I don't care. Still a great win.

I'm redoing the first post for Women's Basketball 2022-2023 to reflect the changes we know of so the roster as of March 31. Updated May 24. THIS appears to be the fall roster. Point Guard: Taylor Morgan 5'6 (jr); Zoe Jackson 5’7 (soph);Tristan Keller 5'8 (fr) Shooting Guard/Small Forward: Madi Miller 5'9 (gr); Bella Earle 5'10 (soph); Reagan Fox 5'10 (fr); Claire Graham 5'9 (fr); Aspen Thornton 5’6 (soph); Raychael Harjo 6'2 (rfr); Hampton Williams 5'9 (fr); Maleeah Langstaff, 6' (grad) Power Forward (Stretch 4): Addison Martin 6'1 (rfr); Brooke Jesson 6’0 (Soph); Low Post: Alexis Babineaux 6'1 (soph); Niyah Johnson 6'2 (soph) Transfers: Harjo looks like a perfect fit in Julie's system. There's a good chance that she will play a 3 rather than 4. Think of a longer Anna McLeod. I think there will be 1 or 2 more transfers including a point guard. Outook: While I never count Julie out, ACUs best players are really, really young. Unlike the Southland, most teams in the WAC have one or more players at least 6’3. With the addition of Harjo, we can put a long team on the floor. The players that I will be watching carefully this summer are Nyiah, Addison, Hampton, and Reagan in addition to the transfers. I'll also be watching where Bella plays. If we don't sign a transfer pg, then she will play a lot of minutes there. Watch this space, I'll update frequently. Outlook 2: (updated May 7) Since the original outlook, we signed three transfers in needed positions. Don’t rule out another transfer if an experienced post player becomes available. Looks like Harjo will play the 4 along with Addy at this point. Not her natural position but Bella could be a scoring machine at the stretch 4. Not only was she a 3* prospect but Zoe started and played a lot of minutes in the Big East last year. All Aspen did was lead the entire Division ll in scoring. Unlike last year’s team, this group appears to be very, very quick on the perimeter. Everybody reports in June for off-season and camps, takes a couple weeks off in July and then comes back to prepare for two or three games in Portugal the first of August. I am curious about one thing, however. There are 13 on the roster with only Madi running out of eligibility. There are 4 2023 commits and 15 total scholarships. How will they make the numbers add up? Oh well, that’s a ‘23 problem.

Oh well, that’s a ‘23 problem. Roughly a year ago after the WAC tournament, I tried to predict the future for 22-23. I think it's interesting to see how things changed. At point guard, Taylor Morgan left the team for personal reasons. If there was a silver lining, it opened the door for a lot of minutes for Aspen and Zoe and, in my opinion, they have delivered and will be quite a duo for the next couple of years. At shooting guard/small forward Madi and Bella have been solid but not exactly dominating. In Julie's offense the wings need to shoot a whole lot better, particularly from 3 point land. I did not see Claire Graham emerging like she has. That bodes well for the future. Keller has gotten a few quality minutes but boy is she raw. Fox and Williams played sparingly. The power forward/low post play was unexpected for sure. Langstaff has done a great job. She is a terrific all-around player. Martin is a bit undersized but she plays big. Harjo has contributed quality minutes and Jessen has played sparingly. Babineaux has only had mop up minutes and Johnson was dismissed from the team. While I did not expect this team to compete for the WAC championship, they have underperformed. They never developed a real identity and as a result consistency has been a problem. Both Aspen and Maleeah have a chance to be newcomer of the year but that's all of the post season honors they will be considered for. So, are the '23 freshmen as good as advertised? All four of the recruits played at the highest level of AAU travel ball and have dominated their high school competition. We'll see. Will we sign a transfer or two? Perhaps a post player or another hybrid 4 like Jamie and Maleeah. But that would mean that somebody gets cut and/or transfers. I'm for sure not going to start a 23-24 thread until I see the team this summer. Watch this space.

ACU Ladies against Sam Houston and we are not really playing to our normal level. We could easily be up 15 or so at half but it is 38-37. Our defense is not as pressing as it normally is. We need a big second half to keep the momentum going. We can do it we just need to get sharper.

Ladies sre playing high level basketball vs a taller opponent. We are quicker but since we don't sub much our girls lose their edge after a while. Thornton leading the team in scoring. Martin is the only Cat with 2 fouls. Harjo has length but doesn't fight for position and the ball like Martin does. Earle has passed up several open shots in the paint only to pass into trouble. Winnable game. Cats by 1 at the half.

Miller is such a fine player but I have wondered why she doesn't score more underneath. When she has the ball deep, she often seems to put up an errant shot. But the strange thing is when we get into a bad pass phase. The strange thing tonight is the weird officials who don't call charging on SHSU, but do so on ACU.
