Matt Brown, who is normally right about such things, is reporting that UIW has decided to go forward with plans to join the WAC on July 1.

UIW staying in the SLC making it even harder for WAC football teams. This is not a good sign if the WAC can't get good schools to stay. Maybe the WAC needs new leadership...

What has the world come to when we are actually fighting over who gets UIW?! 1) There are a lot worse schools out there, 2) It has always been about more than just UIW. At least UIW provided some stability for the WAC, as well as access to another good Texas Market. Maybe the WAC will figure out how to bring in better schools, and keep them.

That I have no doubt will continue, but I have not been seeing good enough results from the WAC leadership in keeping schools. Maybe UIW ultimately couldn't live up to the demands of the WAC.

Too much flipping back and forth about where they wanted to be.

I think there is going to be a lot of flux in the movement of teams from conference to conference, after all UIW had only recently decided to leave Southland and join the WAC and changed its mind very quickly.

Count me as rather surprised at this turn of events. The new SLC commissioner has been very active in working to keep potential defectors. I have not seen the same kind of leadership from the WAC.
I am truly worried about how this will impact fall sport schedules THIS YEAR. Football is scheduled to play a conference game in San Antonio on October 22. Volleyball is scheduled to play a conference game in San Antonio on Nov 12. Soccer is scheduled to play UIW in a conference game in Abilene on October 7. Will those games go forward or will they be scrapped altogether -- much easier to do in VB or soccer than in football. I would suppose that the SLC will scrap all of their fall schedules and start over again. And, I have seen how slow the WAC is in working up new schedules and I do not have much faith they can even produce something in just 2 months. What a mess!

What has the world come to when we are actually fighting over who gets UIW?! Howdy, I know this statement may appear appropriate on the surface, because UIW is not a prize. However, there is another element to look at from the alumni engagement viewpoint -- San Antonio is a base of a large number of ACU alumni and the WAC schools to the west of ACU are simply not areas of alumni concentration. There will never be an alumni event held in Cedar City or St George, Utah. Phoenix area probably has enough alumni to do something, but GCU does not play football and that is typically the draw for alumni. ACU has a decent turnout for the conference BB tourney in Las Vegas, but at least 95% of people who come to the alumni event there are from Texas or are related to players. On the other hand, ACU had over 1,200 people attend a alumni football pre-game event in San Antonio. Having UIW in the WAC would have given ACU another city where they could get some alumni participation.
