Coach Shaw announced the addition of Robby Pickett as assistant men's golf coach replacing Mason Banger who left for an assistants job at UCLA. Pickett comes to ACU from Thomas More University in Kentucky where he was HC for both the men's and women's golf teams. He played golf at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania.

For those of you who like to go to golfstat to follow our golf teams, there will be a change this year. All tournaments and rankings will be done by Spikemark instead of golfstat and birdiefire. The website is very easy to navigate and I for one am happy for the change. Now if it works right! All tourneys, men's and women's are already listed with participating schools. The ladies tourney at A-Ga-Min (starts this Sunday) will have 13 teams this year which is a big jump from what they had last year (7 teams, I think). The ladies are primed and ready to go. Qualifying for the top 5 today and tomorrow. All 7 will make the trip to Michigan.

This is a HUGE change for the NCAA to leave Golfstat. They held the mark for SO long with college golf scores, stats, live stats, etc. Hopefully, this will be a much-needed upgrade!

#1--Spikemark didn't start too well this fall as the ladies tourney was hosted online by genius.com at the last minute. May take a while for them to get up to speed. #2--the write up for ACU men's golf is up on ACUsports. Our year may depend on how consistent Zane Heusel is. He has immense talent but I understand he had lots on his mind last year and was distracted. Waiting in the wings are some ultra talented, if not experienced, underclassmen. At times Buisson, Hoyeau and Comegys were world beaters but so inconsistent. I knew Brian Comegys had a great summer and was glad to hear that Greg Hoyeau did too. The two incoming freshmen hold great promise. Charlie Jacson, Jamie Lewis and transfer Trenton Johnson are additional wildcards. For the 1st time in program there is very little dropoff in the talent level of 1-9. Seeing how they perform under the pressure of tourney golf will be interesting. Could be a banner year or we could still be building. It's still a young team.

First tourney of the year for the men's team starts Sunday at Squire Creek in Choudrant, LA. This is always a large field with 23 teams last year. Playing with 4 freshmen (Buisson, Hoyeau, Comegys and Grigsby) we finished in 18th place. I'd like to see us finish under par (+13 last year) and in the top 10. Some other teams likely are: Houston, LSU, Troy, ULM, Southern Miss, Middle Tenn, Louisiana Tech (host), SMU, UTSA, North Texas et.al. It will be interesting to see who goes to this 1st tourney. Will Trenton Johnson (transfer from Tenn) get a start? Will Heusel be ready (didn't play much in the summer)? Will one of our freshman recruits get to go? Lots to look forward to. Let the games begin.

Our line up is set: #1--Zane Heusel #2--Greg Hoyeau #3--Trenton Johnson #4--Preston Cooper #5--Thomas Buisson Ind--Brian Comegys
So, a transfer and a new freshman make 1st tourney. Coach Shaw said Zane has played well each qualifying round and that Cooper is showing real promise. 1st round Sunday followed by 18 hole rounds on Monday and Tuesday.

Don't know how many of you receive the Golf Newsletter from Coach Shaw but I just received mine this morning. On the newsletter coach Shaw shared how qualifying went for the 1st team event. 5 rounds were played on a combo of Diamondback and Abilene Country Club--South ( I suppose that is Fairway Oaks). Please remember that our players play these courses day after day, so they are very familiar with these tracks. Here are their qualifying scores: Heusel--69-65-66-69-68 Hoyeau--71-66-69-70-68 Cooper--67-68-70-74-65 Johnson--70-66-72-67-70 Buisson--70-66-70-72-68 Comegys--68-66-71-75-72 Jackson--75-68-71-71-70 Defriend--71-70-74-76-70 Lewis--75-72-74-73-69
These are very good scores. Coach is lavish in his praise for Zane, hoping these scores indicate his returning to form this year after a lackluster showing last year. The challenge for our guys at Squire Creek this tourney will be the greens. They will be hard and fast which we've not been able to duplicate at the Jim and evidently at the qualifying courses either. Last year our guys had real trouble on and around the greens which should be our strength. Go figure. Hoping for a stellar start to the season. Go Cats.

I have no idea where the golf tourney is being reported on. Not being updated on Spikemark. Not on genius.com that I can find. Help!

Found it. We are +2 as a team after 5 holes. Heusel, Hoyeau, Johnson all are Even par. Buisson is +2 and freshman Cooper is +3 with a triple bogey on a par 3. Comegys is also even par.

We get a couple of birdies from Heusel and Hoyeau to get back to Even. T-5, one shot from 2nd place. Central Ark starts hot and is -7.

With only Heusel having not finished 9 holes we are +1 as a team and tied for 7th. Central Ark has a big lead at -11. Our scores are Hoyeau -1, Heusel and Johnson at E, Cooper +2 (steadied after the triple) and Buisson is +3. Comegys is also -1.

We've lost a few shots and are now +3 and T-10. The positive is that freshman Preston Cooper has battled back from a triple and a bogey with 4 birdies and is now E par. Johnson has started his 2nd nine with a double and a bogey.

A little rebound by the Cats from +4 and T10 to +1 and a T5. Johnson rebounds with 2 birdies and Heusel birdies. Comegys is also -2 now. A good series of holes.
