Whoa! Zane takes a 9 on his last hole. I'm sure he took some chances to see how low he could finish and it didn't work out. It's a hard hole with creeks on both sides of the fairway and one fronting the green. I've had big scores on the hole myself, so I'm giving him a pass. Certainly not the last round I'd hoped for but...this was not our strongest team. We are in process and I think by next April we will be solid. Next tourney will be New Mexico (Herb Wimbley) and we'll see who we take. I think our top three are coming into focus but Charlie Jackson may throw a wrench into who that is. A good problem to have. May the best men win.

Men's golf tomorrow at Herb Wimberly tourney hosted by New Mexico State. Weak, weak field dominated by JC's and D2 schools. 1-3 ought to be ACU, NMSU, and SFA. Our lineup is Charlie Jackson, Zane Heusel, Greg Hoyeau, Trenton Johnson and Preston Cooper. Leaving at home Thomas Buisson who did not play well in Wichita. Good luck tomorrow guys.

Good start for the guys. 2 shot lead after just 4 holes of play. Johnson -2, Jackson -1, Cooper and Hoyeau are Even and Heusel is +1 after 2 holes.

With 2 holes to go today the guys are in 3rd place at Even par. NMSU leads their own tourney at -20 and UIW is 2nd at -8 (very surprising). Let's see how we finish.

We had a slow finish (+1 for the round) and NMSU had a strong 2nd round (-17 for the round). We will begin the 3rd round in 3rd place 23 strokes out of 1st (only 5 strokes behind NMSU after the 1st round) and 8 shots out of 2nd. Last rounds have not been our best in the fall, so we will see how we progress. A 2nd place finish would be great, a 3rd place finish OK, and a 4th place or worse finish, not so good. Greg Hoyeau leads the team at -3, Zane Heusel and Preston Cooper are at +1, Jaime Lewis (individual) is at +2, Charlie Jackson is +4 and Trenton Johnson is +8 (for us to be contenders at conference, Johnson really needs to be better). We continue to be plagued by bad holes. In the 2nd round we had 4 doubles and a triple. It is those scores that derail a round and a team. Hoping today will be a better day.

Halfway thru the round, we have battled back to E for the day but still +3 for the tourney and in 3rd place. Hoyeau having a bad day going from -3 to +1 for the tourney.

I guess we could have Dominic Sanchez from Mesalands CC on our team. He's having a bad day with a 16, two 10's and two 9's on his card so far. He is at 100 with 5 holes to play. He has made 2 bogeys thru 13 to save his score.

We finished in 3rd place with an Even par day. The team improved 1 stroke each day shooting +2, +1. and even. The surprise for me was that Jamie Lewis, our non team scorer shot +2 for the tourney and would have tied Charlie Jackson for our 2nd best scorer. Scores were Greg Hoyeau (-1 for tourney) +2 today. Charlie Jackson (+2) for the tourney and -2 today. Preston Cooper (+2) for the tourney and +1 today. Zane Heusel (+4) for the tourney and +3 today. Trenton Johnson (+7) for the tourney and -1 for today. Jamie Lewis shot 72-72-71 for +2. I perceive that it is going to be quite a battle for the starting 5 in the spring between 8 golfers. Will certainly be interesting. The only player on our roster that did not play in the fall was freshman, Preston Defriend (he is probably a year away from contending for a spot). All the other guys have had above average fall scoring at times. We still need to clean up our course management (too many double bogeys and worse) and that comes by playing. I hope the winter months are not too harsh in Abilene so the team can hit the ground running in Feb.

Mens golf signee is Colin Leonard from San Angelo Central HS. Another lefty to go with Greg Hoyeau. Colin finished 1st at his district tourney and 9th in the state tourney in Austin last year.

Got coach Shaw's fall newsletter today. Will be breaking ground on a 300+ yard driving range/practice facility soon..also Colin Leonard is the highest ranked men's player to ever sign with ACU.

Is the driving range going on the other side of the service road to the physical plant? Short answer is "YES." Looks like teeing ground will be on one side of the road, just outside of the current indoor hitting bays in the Byron Nelson Clubhouse, but the main portion of the range will be across the service road. You can see the plans on the golf site under newsletters at acu.sports

Golf spring season begins Monday. Both Greg Hoyeau and Preston Cooper, whom I believe to be in our top 5 golfers are not going to Cancun. Preston Defriend makes his initial appearance for the Cats. Our lineup includes Heusel, Jackson, Buisson, Lewis, Johnson and Defriend. This is a 72 hole tourney, whereas most are 54 holes, so a good test to open the year. Not a large field and not particularly strong so will be nice to see where we stand at the end. A tourney win would be nice and would help us get in better tourneys next year.
