Got on today and noticed nobody had started a thread on Northern Alabama. What are everyone's thoughts?
Looking at their excitement about breaking ground on a new stadium called Bank Independent Stadium that is set to host 10,000 spectators and will be designed to add future expansion. A tower with new weight room, 1 suites, stadium club, outdoor gathering areas and more. The stadium will actually be a football/soccer field along with a baseball field where the centerfield fence will back up to the new bowled stadium.
The Lions are hosting Homecoming this weekend and are inducting new members to their hall of fame.
UNA is 2-5 with wins over West Georgia (25-16) on the road and Utah Tech at home (60-14). Prior to the two-game win streak, the Lions lost at Memphis, vs. then-No. 21 Illinois State, at UT-Martin and at home against Tarleton (28-14).
The home team is averaging 22.71 points per game and giving up 28.86 ppg. The offense is averaging 157.7 yards per game on the ground, 204.14 yards through the air and totals 361.9 yards of total offense. Opponents are averaging a total of 347.1 yards per game this year, including 161 yards rushing and 186.14 yards passing.
Jayvian Allen leads the tea with 269 yards rushing on 77 attempts for 44.83 per game. He also has a team-high four rushing TDs. Dennis Moody is second with 31.0 yards per game rushing (51-217) and Jalen Fletcher is third with 26 ypg (26-182). TJ Smith is listed as the starting QB. He is 47-72 for 527 yards and six touchdowns. Ben Harris is 15-34 for 218 yards with two INTs. Ari Patu played in the first three games and was 48-86 for 535 yards with one TD and five INTs. Patu got hurt in game three, and the other two have been competing for the starting position. Smith has started the last three weeks.
Fun fact: Takairee Kenebrew enters his seventh season at UNA (redshirt, injury redshirt, Covid waver for 2020). He burned his first year of eligibility in 2021. He is the only current UNA player born before 2000. He leads the team in receptions with 28 for 417 yards (14.89 per catch) for an average of 59.57 yards per game. He has three TDs. Dakota Warfield (26-307) and Kobe Warden (18-201) are second and third on their list.
Gregory Reddick leads the defense with 48 total tackles, with four TFL for minus-26 yards, including two sacks for minus-20 yards. Josh Anglin is second with 47 tackles and Jackson Bratton has 46. The defense has four INTs this season, 17 sacks for minus-149 yards, 43 TFL (-199), seven forced fumbles and five breakups.
In the last three games against UAC opponents, the Lions have racked up 616 yards rushing and thrown for 624 yards. UNA allowed Tarleton to run for 284 yards, and in the last three games they've allowed a total of 374 yards rushing, including just 10 last week to Utah Tech. The defense has allowed 423 yards passing in the last three outings, including 230 yards and two TDs last week against Utah Tech.
UNA is 11th in FCS in time of possession, averaging 33:11 per game. ACU averages 29:16.
To compare the only common opponent, ACU rushed for 323 yards against Utah Tech and allowed 180 yards rushing. The Wildcats passed for 286 yards but allowed 328 yards passing. However, 202 of those total yards by UTU came in the final drive of the third quarter and the entire fourth quater where they scored 14 of their final points in the last nine minutes of the game (146 yards on two scoring drives) with some to mostly reserves for the Wildcats.
So it looks like if our offense can win the day and play like we know they are capable, and the defense can slow the passing game, ACU comes away with a road win and stays undefeated in conference action. Go Wildcats!
