Well, this week is time to get ready for our money game. My big concern is no injuries. We are already a little banged up from our first two games. Luckily, we have a little bit of an easier opponent after Mizzou and before conference starts to ramp up. I want us to have a clean game and still be able to show improvements. KP has good comments about the game and several other things.

I am traveling to Columbia for the game. Hopefully we can keep the score respectable.

Mizzou fan here. I am not really sure what to expect. Historically (the last 20 years or so) we have handled FCS competition relatively easily outside of Missouri State putting up 43 points in a 72-43 Mizzou win in 2017. I have tried brushing up on ACU the last few days. I have to admit it was well into the summer this year before I realized that Adam Dorrel had been let go. I would scoreboard check ACU games in the first few years once he got the job because I remember him from his time at Northwest Missouri.
2-0 is a good start for the new coach I would say/guess. Getting some votes in the FCS Coaches poll is pretty nice. I didn't know until the weekly press conference yesterday that Eli Drinkwitz and Keith Patterson worked together at Arkansas State for a bit. He was pretty complimentary of the QB McIvor. He also mentioned Kendall Catalon and his ability in the return game which has been a real sore spot for us this year.
We were a somewhat disappointing 6-6 last season after a pretty good 2020 where we surprised and Drinkwitz went 5-5 in an all SEC schedule in his first year in CoMo. Internally he really seemed to feel like this 2022 Mizzou team would his best yet in year 3. The outside expectations were pretty low--most predictions had Mizzou 5th or 6th in the SEC East. The Tigers took care of Louisiana Tech without much struggle at all in the opener but looked shockingly bad on the road last week in a 40-12 loss at K-State. That result has really dampened the enthusiasm around the program unfortunately.
Our QB play has not been good so far. The offensive line has looked subpar. We have pretty good talent in the WR room, but lack the same explosiveness with the RBs. A D2 transfer is our second leading rusher between the starting QB Brady Cook in fact. I have more faith in the Mizzou defense which seems improved from a very shaky unit in 2021. Special teams has been pretty bad. We have a great kicker, who has a legit chance to win the Lou Groza award but our punter has struggled and we have given up huge returns to both LA Tech and K-State. Catalon seems like he will be a challenge for us to contain in the return game.

Thanks Mizzoman, very good write up. We all just hope to provide an entertaining game for you. We have great respect for Missouri and know you have been getting better in a tough conference. I just hope for no injuries and a good learning experience for everyone in the game.

We brought in a lot of talent, but several of them hadn't played in a while. That includes our QB. He is good, and shows a lot of promise for us in the long game. In the short game, he is having to improve his decision making in key situations. Both our RB and WR group are deep, even with a couple of RBs dinged up. Our OL is young and has contributed to our QB having to step up his learning curve. They do well sometimes, but consistency is still lacking. Our DL and LBs have been pretty consistent. We are getting good pass rushing and stopping the run. I think we need to be quicker on the ends, but we are getting it done. Our secondary is fairly young, but has shown a lot of potential and break-ups in key situations. Over-all, our defense has been a little ahead of our offense. Our special teams has been solid, but that is against FCS opponents. We will see against P5 FBS competition. I think our offense will struggle against your defense, but if we can spread the ball around, which we usually do, I hope we can get a few scores in. I really want to see how well our defense can contain you guys a little. Can we slow you down??

Drinkwitz came to Mizzou as a supposed offensive guru replacing a defensive-minded head coach in Barry Odom but for all of his experience under Gus Malzahn and the acclaim he has received previously, it's been a pretty predictable and boring attack. Our freshman 5 star recruit from STL (Luther Burden) is the deep threat but they struggled to get him the ball against K-State. We used him as a wildcat QB for a few plays against LA Tech and it worked well but that wrinkle was not used last week in the rain in Manhattan. The hope in Columbia is that we can get out to a big lead and play our supposed QB of the future in freshman Sam Horn who is 3rd string right now, but the backup QB threw 2 INTs last week and Horn might have supplanted him on the depth chart. The negativity will be palpable at Faurot Field on Saturday if we struggle on offense or really if ACU is giving us a good game overall. I am not a super knowledgeable FCS guy outside of the playoffs and the Missouri Valley Football Conference but I enjoy getting to know about new schools (for us) each year in the non-conference. I saw some pictures of the football stadium down there and that thing is really nice. It'd be an upper echelon MVFC stadium easily. I go to a couple of Missouri State games each year when it doesn't conflict with the Tigers schedule and that's a top 5 FCS team that would be thrilled to play in a stadium like that. Hope you guys have success in the WAC in the years to come.

Hope you guys have success in the WAC in the years to come. I was curious to see if Horn plays and if we can continue to get a decent QB rush. So far, against FCS, our QB rush has been really effective. I don't expect it to be quite on par with you guys but think we should be able to cause some havoc. I don't see you guys struggling offensively, but hopefully we can slow you down and help control the game a little. Our stadium is only a few years old now and has been great to have. We played in the city's high school ISD stadium for years; Shotwell Stadium. It wasn't bad, actually held 16,000+ but was old and had no equipment for broadcasting. Wildcat Stadium was built with broadcasting in mind and continues to be on par with any P5 setup as far as that goes. It holds 12000+ but we rarely get crowds above 8000. Coach Patterson has brought a real sense of community to the team, so far. When Dorrel came, I was so happy because I thought he would bring some old school midwestern power football to us. He struggled his whole time here. Each year he became more distant from fans, public, etc... As each year passed and it was more and more HIS team, we saw he simply wasn't going to repeat the success he had at NWMS. So far KP is different, but he mostly comes from a P5 background and seems to have that mentality. We are more physical and balanced. Still, everything is new and how it will play out long term is yet to be seen. He has us on the right track. The game this Saturday should be good, although I don't know how close we keep it. We seem to play our FBS opponents fairly well. You will pretty much see an RPO from us for the most part offensively with a split between the run and pass. Our QB can run but usually doesn't a lot so far. Hopefully it will be a good crowd. I wish I could make it up there.

Welcome to the Cat Chat fan forum. It’s great to hear from opponents fans. Watched some of the K-State game and figured you overlooked them in anticipation of the big game against ACU. It’s a shame that Dorrel didn’t do better here but it wasn’t a good fit. He never seemed to make the switch from a D2 mentality.
I’ve talked to several of the players and they are super excited to play at Faurot. They want to win. We’ve not gotten much love from the prognosticators and they have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. But of course, they are as realistic as we are that few FCS schools are capable of competing with P6 schools. So stay injury free and bring home $600k or whatever.
I expect you will get great effort from our guys and we hope to put a scare into the Tigers even if we don’t win.

I thought he did well at Northwest Missouri but that is a place with their history and resources where you are only unsuccessful if you essentially try to fail. Moving on to an ambitious school who is moving up from D2 to FCS and in a state that has tons of college football programs is much different. I recall back when Barry Odom got the Mizzou job that he tried to hire Adam Dorrel as special teams coordinator in January of 2016. Things probably would have ended up about the same here if that occurred but I wonder at ACU. In any event, it seems that Keith Patterson has you all pointed in the right direction now.

Patterson ‘gets’ Texas recruiting and the skill set needed for success at the FCs level in ways Dorrel never mastered.

Mizzou fan, ‘ didn't know until the weekly press conference yesterday that Eli Drinkwitz and Keith Patterson worked together at Arkansas State for a bit. ‘ that doesn’t surprise me. Coach Patterson has been coaching at FBS and P5 for a lot of years. . His last gig was at Texas Tech as DC, which ended on a high note as TTU shut down Mike Leach’s Miss State team. This is his first HC job at age 58. We sr Citizens are rooting for him.

I listened to Samford’s coach before their game with UGA about changes they make when playing a p5 opponent- more drop back protection for the QB, going for it on fourth downs anywhere beyond the 50, being more aggressive on defense, with lots of stunts and blitzes. They didn’t win, but did much better on the scoreboard than Oregon had done the week before. I wonder if we will make changes to adjust to the level of play?

I am sure there is a dilemma particularly for a new head coach who is trying to implement his schemes and mentality about how to approach a matchup where you probably have to take lots of chances in order to pull an upset. It wouldn't surprise me to see some new wrinkles with respect to scheme but if I was Patterson I think I would save those sorts of things for a WAC opponent. Completely unrelated, but I just saw the ACU mascot. Wow. After Willie the Wildcat tormented us last week in Manhattan we have to face a team with the same color scheme and another Willie the Wildcat on the sideline. That will be very jarring in person. Lulz.
